So I know that the manual says the Jotul 507 came with a 5" to 6" adapter...but I don't have the factory adapter. What I have noticed is 5" pipe fits nicely over the collar, but then you would need a clamp to over the outside. Is that really what everyone is running on these stoves? Also, local sheet metal fabricator guy (old school dude) thought that with coal stoves one should run the stove pipe crimp in the "up" position so that the carbon monoxide is less of an issue. I've never heard or seen that so it seemed very questionable to me. Thoughts on these two questions?

I'm not familiar w/ the adapter, but how would that leave your choice?? crimp up or down?? It's been a never ending question--up or down--I run my crimps down & have never had a CO problem--which ever you choose, just put the pipes together properly & you will not have any problems--some seal all joints w/ high temp, I just put 3 screws in each joint--again, up or down is about whatever floats your boat me thinks---are the adapters available??? if so---get one

I'm with Fred on that one. I've always installed stove pipe with the crimp side down. I'm sure it goes back to wood stove days where it was a creosote issue. Beyound that, I can't imagine what benefit have the crimps up would give you regarding CO?

Having the crimps point towards the chimney will help minimize the amount of flyash that escapes during a "puff back". Of course if you seal the joints as Fred suggested it doesn't really matter which way the crimps go.

Just get a 5" to 6" adapter made of black pipe, and drill the flue collar to accept a few screws to hold it in place.

All good points. I use furnace cement to seal the joints on my wood stove pipe - I'll just follow the same recipe.

I'm a little apprehensive to drill into the collar but might be a decent option.

One good puff-back and the pipe comes apart will surely make you a believer.

Good point since that will seriously ruin your day. I would have some way to secure it above just plugged in or over the top of the collar.

Get a good drill bit, and go slow.
