Saw many of these in the 70's everyone I saw burning was being fed nut coal. The price on these now is much more than what was being paid when they were available. In one of the Jotul flyers they advertised a monastry in Mass that had a truck load of these little rascals hooked up to the chimneys in the monastry providing great heat. Jotul had some really neat wood and coal stove offerings in the 70's we had a #4 wood stove that did a great job. Stopped once at the Jotul headquarters in Portland, this was not a retail operation but they still were great and helped me out.

I have been going crazy trying to find this stove. Does anyone have insight as to where I may find one? I am also looking for almost any of the wood buring ones.

I thought I'd dig this up from the past.... I found one of these for sale. Going to take a road trip on Saturday & pick it up. $200 seems like a fair asking price....and the guys wife said it might be negotiable! If it's in as good a shape as he says I'd feel bad giving him less than $200, but if the grates are bad I think he'd drop the price some to make up the difference, but, he said not only are the grates good, all the firebirck and inner panels are fine. Heheeeee! I think it's a no brainer. The color? I forgot to ask. Some things should be a surprise, or, " Gee, the Green ones aren't worth as much, I'll give you $38 for it". *GiGgLe*

I wish Jotul had the 507 for sale in the USA.

We started burning coal in 1984 with two 507's in our first house.

There is a Jotul 507 for sale on ebay. It is a green model. It has been listed for a long time and I see it has a short time left. My Jotul is green and is still hammering away. The 507 can be run at very high temps for very extended periods of time without damage. This winter I have run my Jotul at temps of 700 F to 875 F 24/7 (October 1 to present). I have run it at 900 F once for a short period of time. The manual states that under intense firing the cast iron can exceed 932 F. At 900 F the interior cast pieces and fire brick start to glow yet the outside cast housing never got as hot as the inner casting or fire brick and at 900 F the burn time rapidly dropped to just two hours on a full load of coal. The manual doesn't state that the 932 F is the limit. I believe the stove could easily withstand a firing of over 1,000 F, however, I'm not willing to risk the stove and see if it can. The brick and cast are still like new. My Jotul heats 1060 sq. ft. to a temp of 68-72 F all winter. For a stove that ony has a maximum BTU output of 42,400 and a heating capacity of 3,000-5,500 cu. ft. it sure can heat well and burn very efficiently. When it is very cold outside I mix stove and nut coal to get a good hot burn and a longer burn time. I would love to find a red one at a decent price. I will have burned three and a half ton in my Jotul by the end of this season.

Freddy, for that price it is a deal. Even if it isn't perfect or it is in poor condition it is worth it just for parts. I purchased one for $50. and had planned on keeping it for parts, however, this summer it will be refurbished and possibly pressed back into service as a second unit in the house. My question is: Can you power vent a Jotul? If I can power vent a Jotul I would definitely install the second unit in my house. Approximately how many sq. ft. is 5,500 cu. ft.? I have not found a conversion formula for cu. ft. to sq. ft. From my experience with the Jotul, they are a solid and almost an indestructible unit. It is a shame the Jotul is no longer in production. Freddy, if the unit your looking at has been over fired, you will see small cracks in the grate, grate support, and the cast deflector shield under the top cover. Also the inner cast pieces and fire brick should look like crap as well. Even in this poor condition it is still fixable. If the enamel coating on the stove has signs of bubbling I wouldn't mess with it, not even for parts. This is just my two cents on the Jotul for whatever it is worth. Freddy, keep us posted on the stove and if you purchase it post some pics.

Yes, I am watching this 507 on my Ebay 'Watched' list. No one is bidding it, probably cuz he is asking too much. He just keeps re-listing it when the auction ends.

I'm waiting for him to drop that minimum down. Looks like he is a re-saler or a pawnshop, or something.

If the building is 5,500 feet tall, it's one square foot! Ba-da-bing! OK, probably the building has 8 foot ceilings, so it would be about 700 sq feet.

You can powervent anything, but with coal the vent fan has to run 24/7 so it's not the best way to go.

How much electricity does a power vent actually use (amps, watts)? It would probably be cheaper to install and run a power vent rather than putting up a stainless steel chimney. Anyone ever figure out how much a power vent costs per year to run? With a power vent a baro is not needed, correct? Just set the draft with a manometer and that is it? Is a power vent noisy in the house or outside?

Freddy, also look at the bolts that hold the stove together. I have seen a few stoves that look fine until you look at the bolts and find that half of them are broken off for some reason. I was lucky when I found my stove, it had only been fired a couple times. My wife would like me to find a red one if I am going to install a second Jotul. I missed a chance to purchase one locally. I like the red, it would make a nice addition to the two green units I have. $500 for a used Jotul in good shape is not a bad price either. I paid $550 for the one I have installed in the house and $50 for the other unit I have to refurbish. I had to drive to northern PA to get the one I use, however, it was worth the trip. I had the wood stove out and the Jotul installed and running within a half hour or an hour as I remember. I will never burn wood ever again. I mentioned it on another post but thought I'd tell the short story here. I bought two 507's yesterday. Both green, both need the upper liners, but other than that are in pretty good shape. One looks better, the other has tighter hinges and grate pinion. Both have perfect grates. The better looking one is the one that isn't as tight...of course.

Anyone know what they sold for new back in the 80's?
