To buy or not to buy Jotul 505

After reading the positive remarks on the Jotul 507 and my ever growing appetite to fill my secretely rented garage with more stoves (my husband still does not know) I have laid my eyes on a Jotul 505. Is it worth it, approx $ 450. Good condition.

$450 seems a bit high based on the single ebay search for a used one. If a delivered price I think its OK. Ebay listing gives some nice pics too.

This is a 13-30K BTU appliance ? I'll leave it up to you to decide if the BTU rating is sufficient unless you wish to inquire further on it.

You put anthracite coal into it, it burns and creates heat. If you have specific concerns/question (about stuff like how hard is it to maintain v. other stoves, etc) please post and people may respond.

Keeping a secret garage from a husband is tight.

Needed some time to consider. I have bought a Jotul 507.
Price € 175 ($ 190) in very good condition, the last 30 years not in use, only as decoration.
I had to drive 200 miles to Germany to pick it up and 200 miles back but it was worth the trip.

One problem, the top door draft regulator is stuck, no movement.
I have used WD40 but until now no result.

Any suggestions? Keep on going with the WD40?

You did real good on the price. WD40 is not the best for stuck metal. PB Blaster is better and there are likely others as good. Patience is important. A little heat may help too. Good luck

Gentle vibration to loosen stuck regulator. Tap lightly both ways.

I use one of those T pins to scrape around the shaft to get as much free as possible before gently tapping to free up such a thing.

Possibly some warping ? Without pics, hard to say more than what others have suggested.

A final thought .. to try a breaker bar with wooden "feet" and give it about 500 N of force on it to see if it turns.....I like the idea of disassembly best that someone suggested

Unfortunately PB Blaster is not available in the Netherlands.
But my husband had WD40 specialist super oil and that did the trick, after 30 minutes it was loose.
Now I have a dilemma, which one shall I install…..

The green one and the Jotul sitting side by side hooked to one chimney would look real nice if your draft is good enough for 2 stoves and you have room. But they all look nice.

I would install whichever one would provide the appropriate amount of heat that you are looking for. They all look nice .

Simple ! Put all onto a pickup truck, leaving tailgate off. Drive around, doing donuts and jumping ramps. Whichever is last to remain on the truck's bed is the one to install.

This method also works for deciding what girl friend to stick with.

Good idea, I can try it with my Morgan Plus 4.

It's even got a rack on the back to mount a stove when you go garage saleing.
