Thats interesting info Wal. If I see some local again I may give them a try, depending on price and distance of course. The ad I see on facebook is a distance from me.

£375 = $518 just can’t understand why anthracite is so expensive in the uk ? How much do you pay for it over in the USA ?

My area is higher than most as Im 1000 miles from the source but $300 a ton bagged. Some here get it under $200 in bulk loose picked up at breakers. Bagged is always more.

Guys that are close to the breaker and can pick up can get it for under $200 a ton. I get bulk delivery for $235 per ton from a guy that's located between me and the breaker.

For bulk, I pay $185 delivered and my father in law pays $175 delivered. We do live in coal country...

So if you are paying around $200 a tonne which is £ 144 , I can understand how it is economical to run a large stove or baseburner. As you can see I was paying £375 a tonne , nearly 3 times the amount that you pay , so you can understand why I was looking for a cheaper alternative.

Just want to say I love my baseburner it heats most of the back of the house , and the other 2 stoves keep the rest of the house warm . I wouldn’t swap them for anything , it has been my dream to own a baseburner for years and now I own one I am really happy , it produces plenty of heat and looks beautiful, just wish the uk would come more in line with you lads in the states price wise on anthracite ha ha !

Just a update on the smokeless man made coal . Decided to try it in my baseburner as the temp had dropped last week to around 5 degrees. Filled it 50lb in the pot , 23 lb in the coal magazine. Burns nice and hot ( stove was 545 degrees) but it browned up the mica and didn’t clear even at the temp it was running at ! Everything had burned to ash in 14 hrs , so not economical to burn as anthracite was giving me over 24 hrs before filling just the coal magazine! Took over a hr to clean all the mica windows with diluted white vinegar . So it’s great to use in my other two stoves , but I will just have to bite the bullet and pay for anthracite for the baseburner even though it is more costly in the long run I will get longer burn times and no browsing of the mica !

Hi Wal, I don’t believe there are any active Anthracite mines in the UK. Shipping becomes a major component of the price in that case. I live in Ontario, around 500 miles from the mines in PA. I can buy whatever the going price in PA for it per ton, but when I add shipping and taxes, it is around $550 per ton In Canadian dollars.
I can get it from a business in Ontario for a little less and that is about as good as it gets short of bringing a whole railcar in.

Hi , They still mine anthracite in Wales that’s where all the anthracite comes from . I bought direct from a company who are only a few miles from the actual mine + it was free delivery ( by truck ) to my home which is probably around 200 miles away . But even with free delivery Paying £375 English pound ( over $ 500) is a lot to pay per tonne , when my baseburner burned that in 3 months . Like I said previously just don’t understand why it is so expensive, unless the mine in Wales is keeping its price high as it’s the only one that’s operational?

Wales was the centre of anthracite mining in the UK, but I thought the mines were closed in the past decade. Assume Phurnicite is being produced from culm. Most hard and soft coals now being imported from Eastern Europe.
If there is a mine still open in Wales, they are probably selling for what the market can bear. That or with dwindling supply, the cost to extract is high.
