How do you all handle soot build up and removal? I saw there are throw in soot sticks. Not sure if that's a quick/easy maintenance item or if I'm worrying about something I need not.

It’s not so much that it’s horrible build up yet. Just wanting to know about maintenance ideas more than anything when it comes to soot. I know some use a wire brush at the end of the season and it will build up and act as an insular which reduces effective heat exchange. Definitely want to minimize it along the way if possible.
Here is a pic though.

I would be more concerned about the chimney/connector clogging up with bit soot. Under the wrong conditions a 6"pipe can be choked down to 3" by it. However if you burn wood and coal together that probably won't happen.

Bituminous soot isn't anything like smouldered wood creosote either so no worry there unless like said it were to accumulate to the point to partially block your stove pipe or outlet. And 8 in. stove pipe works way better than 6 in.
Keep in mind that straight up and out the roof leaves little places for soot to pile up like with 90's in the run.
