I went to rural king to get an elbow and run of pipe. I started to leave and turned the corner to the main isle and what did they have? “Managers special” coal only Hotblast 1357 at a price I could not pass by.
This is my first “new stove” of any kind. I’ve only EVER bought 2nd hand. It looks pretty substantial. I’ve always been Leary of these box store stoves but it’s not too shabby.
I’ll be burning bit in it since it’s plentiful. I’ve only burned bit in warm morning so this might be somewhat of a learning curve.
I wonder what exactly makes this a “coal only” stove! It looks identical to the wood hotblast sitting next to it. I reckon that’s why it was on sale. There’s not a lot of coal burners around here. When I tell people I heat with coal they get that deer in the headlights look. Anyway it would be nice to to have a wood option so I wonder what would happen if I did burn wood.
She’s sitting on my truck until morning. I’m not fooling around in the dark trying to wrangle it out of the truck bed. If anyone has any advice or suggestions I’m all ears. Now would be the best time to make modifications. Here’s a pic in the truck if I can get it to work.

There is a guy on you tube has a 1557 that made a couple of mods to his and he burns wood and coal both. He claims he gets great burn times. The biggest mod he made was the control on the feed door. He put on a control made by thermocontrol. They make boilers. That control is thermostat controlled from heat off the door of the furnace. He said it shuts the furnace down and has good control.

I got the extra row of fire brick installed. Welded some bosses on and used washers to keep the brick in place. I’m gonna guess I can probably get 70lbs in it now.
Now I’ll start on the over fire air.

I’m hoping it’s not too much for the stove. I’d really like to get as long a burn as possible.
My fat arse isn’t much of a contortionist. It was pretty difficult getting both hands in there, one holding the boss the other holding the stinger and trying not to arc the stinger anywhere else in the box and still being able to see what I’m doing.

I’m not sure of any advantage of having the bimetallic on the door for coal. FWIW I’ve never used one.
The fan control switch may be a worthy upgrade. I still have the one off of my furnace I removed last year. If the snap discs prove problematic I will give it a try.
Here’s another interesting one. I’m not clear on how he got the egt monitor to kick the actuator off.

I had an early version that still had straight door on it. I could heat the house an entire day on about 40# of cheap Ohio lump from Thompson Bro's. Stoke in the morning and again at night. Only burned on half the grate unless it was really windy and in the teens or lower. Kept the front half covered with a plate so air flow would be where I wanted it.

I hope mine performs that well. I still have to hook it up yet. I was making pretty good headway but got sidetracked by surgery so I’m still recovering. Hope to get back to it soon.

I’m a little more ambulatory today so headed down to the basement. Got my flat grate from Amazon today. Looks like a pretty good fit for this little furnace.
I’m also working on a secondary air supply. I picked up a stainless “h” burner for a bbq. I welded a box up to insert a black pipe run into. I’ll hang it underneath the baffle. Should be somewhat preheated. I realize this probably won’t last for long hopefully one season. It’s merely an experiment. If it pans out I’ll be buying a cast iron “h” burner.

Cool! I think the stainless steel burner will do better than expected, longevity wise. I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out being up that high.
