Warm Morning 523

Hi guys,

I picked up a 523 today. It's looks a little rough on the outside but the bricks look fantastic. I was wondering if anyone had an exploded view of the stove. I've been looking at it and really can't see where sealing anything would be beneficial. It's loose all over... Lol. I don't want to just spin my wheels tearing it down if it's really not a airtight stove.

P. S. Here's a little test for. The wood burners. What is it?

i remember those horizontal cylinder stoves the name escapes me just now though. there were several, some had really cool load doors.

i'll need more and better pics of the WM to know but i'll say there was never any gaskets in any of the top sections of the stove.

that doesn't mean you can't clean up all the joining surfaces and use some stove cement in them. the most important thing to check is the floor and and crimp to the barrel. these stoves are either working or sitting in uncontrolled environments drawing moisture, especiallyunder the bottom.

i brush around the ash pit door frame and shoot cement into any gaps. you want to do the dollar bill test on the ash door too. file or use silicone as needed.

as with everything, go with your gut. if you are uncomfortable about it do something, and as always make sure you have CO detectors.

Do the blocks need cemented together?

no do not cement them together, they are beveled and hold themselves in place.

That stove is "The Elm" wood stove by Vermont Iron Stove Works made in the 70's. Been looking for one of those too to refurbish.

Actually, I believe one of the co-owners, Steve Slatter, was re-building them for a while and had parts available as well as castings. I've tried to get hold of him with no luck, so I'm not sure if he's still working on them and offering parts or not.

Unfortunately, I do not do Facebook or messenger...I'm lucky to post on this forum or send an email. LOL!

Like several of the old Warm Mornings...The Elm Wood Stove is another stove I'd like to eventually get my paws on.

EDIT:
I just tried to email again and it will not go through. Would love to get in touch with, Steve, somehow. If someone has contact info please forward it to me.

I don't really need another wood stove, but I always thought those were classy looking. I actually found them long before I found the coalpail forum. For a wood stove they're the next best thing to a Vermont Castings wood stove, as far as the way they can be made to look with the warming shelves and all. I think they're pretty cool.

Wasn't too long ago Mr. Slatter built a 36incher Elm stove for one the TV stars that builds custom cars or motorcycles, I think.

Winner winner chicken dinner! I took the elm tree off the Pyrex pie plate window because that would be a dead give away.

I've always wanted one of these as well. I can remember them as a teen and thinking they were so cool. I really lucked out in this CL find.

I emailed Slater a few weeks ago and he responded but I was looking for a baffle, and he has parts.

So I have the 523 apart, well except for the last Bolt in the corner if the bottom door frame. There is always one. Stinking Phillips head stripped out. I can't reach the back of it with a grinder because of the tight location and the screw itself is a flat head so it's recessed. I'll have to drill it. That'll be a job for tomorrow.

I've been trying to post pics but keep getting an error. It just says HTTP error. Weird I didn't have any problems posting those earlier pics.

I think it's working now. The thing with the hole in it laying next to the grate is some kind of insulation that was on the bottom of the stove. Hope it's not aspestos. Looks like the mice did a number on it. Its got shine strands running through it. Not visible in the pic. I think I'll just replace with rock wool.

What's the significance of the square nuts? They weren't much of an issue since I have a square nut socket, I just don't want to use square nuts unless it's some kind of coal stove requirement.

Yeh weird. It worked for me but I haven't used it in about a week so maybe something is amiss. Try pasting it maybe that will work.

Well I managed to get some stove time in today. Started working on the barrel. Think I'll leave the inside as is. This thing feels a bit lighter now... Lol.

I bought some rustoleum high temp paint today so should be able to paint it tomorrow.
