So this may be a dumb question but can the soot from bituminous coal cause a chimney fire or is it inert? Thanks

Soot is incomplete combustion of carbon. Soot will burn but you have to get it over 1000F to get it to ignite. If your stove pipe or chimney is over 1000F you have a bigger problem than a soot deposit.

Right ha! Like a house fire. Makes sense. I guess anything burns or changes state if you get it hot enough.

Bit soot will glow then vanish with no roaring fire like wood creosote.

More likely to plug up the chimney than catch fire as I understand it.

Easy to deal with but that sums it up.
