There is a local craigslist ad offering about a ton of "Laredo Cannel Fireplace Coal" What is it and would it work in my Locke 120? Jerry

Bit.!!!!!! Terrestrial oil----real soft coal--carvable they say!!

I have a couple of big chunks of cannel. Very hard and smooth, appears to be like a plastic. It burns with absolutely beautiful colors and the smell is undeniably horrific, I will make no attempt to describe the smell here as the thought of it churns my gut.

A friend's father used to burn chunks of cannel coal in their fireplace. One or two big chunks at a time, about the size of stove wood. Burned for hours with oily black smoke and yellow flames. And yeah, the smoke stunk !

Cannel coal has ben covered in other threads.

Before petroleum and electricy were discovered or widly used it was the source for what oil was burned in (coal) oil lamps for everyday lighting where it was available. The market for coal oil in New York City and the rest of the North East was huge, as one may imagine.

To answer your Q...no for stoves, fireplace only, too high of volatiles to contain in any enclosed appliance.

I got a reply from the seller, who said the price was $500 for the entire ton, but considering what you all told me about the stuff, it seems very high to me considering I can get Anthracite for much less. I just said I had to pass based on what I had learned, and there was no more conversation between us. Jerry

Yeah I would definitely pass that up. You would be be more happy with anth then that.
