I have been using large lump coal from central ohio fuel near Dover ohio. Still get a lot of smoke when I add coal or first start up but after that burns reasonably clean with lots of heat but still smokes more than I would like. Would like to try some other coals to try and cut down on the smoke. Any recommendations? is lighter weight or heavier weight for same volume of coal preferred? example: 2lb softball size lump or 3-4lb softball size lump? I tried some anthracite burns great but even nut size is too small and is hard to shake without falling through or jamming grates have to be careful shaking. Can pick up coal myself and don't mind hand loading to keep fines to a minimum. I have tried Thompson Bros but Central fuel burns better for me and they are closer. Any suggestions?

I don't think you are going to find any Ohio coal that is not going to smoke or smoke less than another coal. Short of changing your furnace to an underfeed stoker type of furnace you will just have to manage with the smoke the best you can.

I'm overly happy with the bituminous egg ("2-5") coal that I got at Dettingers. Its about 15 minutes east of Thompsons. It smokes a little when fresh coal is lit. But after a half hour or so is clean as a whistle. You have to look for the heat waves coming out of the stack to even know its burning. He told me that it came from a mine near Morgantown. First chance I get I'll be going back to build stock.

what's he want per ton? hows the ash? does it fuse and melt while burning or does it not do that?
