Where did you hear about the Orchard mine? I looked up Good Spring, PA but it looks like it's right smack in the middle of anthracite country to me-unless they have mines elsewhere and truck in bituminous to sell there.
Hi Badfish, I live in Burlington Co., N.J. I read about the Orchard mine on here someplace. It would be Anthricite country. Bituminous coal is hard to find in our area. I heard there is a place in Tioga Co., Pa. that is selling Bituminous picked up at the mine for 60.00 per ton. I am waiting for some contact info. I will post it as soon as I recieve it. Punxutawney is quite a drive from northwest Hunterdon Co.,N.J. ?

VALIER COAL YARD, THOMPSON BROS., AND CENTRAL FUELS

VALIER COALYARD, VALIER, PA (JUST SOUTH OF PUNXSUATAWNEY)

Phone: 814-938-5171

Kittaning coal, very good, high vol (30%+), 10% ash, 13,500btu/lb, very high ash fusion temp (won't even fuse in my stoker) mid swelling index... won't stick together very badly during combustion.

ANTHRACITE (don't know his source)

CENTRAL FUELS, NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO (JUST SOUTH OF CANTON)

*note: I have purchased coal from these people for my stoker furnace, and they screened coal of the size I needed even though they had run out of any on hand (1-1/4"x1/4"). VERY nice people to deal with and had a good selection of lump coal from different seams, but they run out fast toward the middle of nov (everyone is buying it to burn in stoves and open fireplaces, some of the lump higher volitile coals are VERY popular for open fireplaces in that area.)

Sells a variety of fuels including Stoker sizes and lump. Phone # 330-339-5111 MOSTLY #5 AND #6 (KITTANING) COAL BEDS.

THOMPSON BROS. MINING COMPANY- JUST SOUTH OF YOUNGSTOWN, OH

3379 E Garfield Rd
New Springfield, OH 44443 (Youngstown, OH)

Phone: (330) 549-3979

open 9-5 weekdays, saturdays until 12pm

they Offer:

Anthracite (don't know the source)

Ohio #4 Brookville bituminous coal tends not to cake badly, but does coke easily when fresh/wet. Not high in fixed carbon. harder to ignite than kittaning or pittsburgh coals, but seems to be very low ash. Sizes offered range from large lump to screened pea stoker and everything in between. stoker pea is slightly more expensive, but is very uniform @ 1/2"x1" and works ok in combustioneer small stokers. I've found that a coal with higher fixed carbon while still being a high volitile coal tends to work better and stay lit easier than this #4 coal in a stoker.

Kentucky lump coal, higher btu's, and higher AFT (around 2900º)
*UPDATE* : I've tried this coal in my hand-fired stove and it's probably some of the best coal I've EVER burned period. Bright white ash, pleasant smell, burns GREAT and slow, DOES NOT melt together while burning (has low coke button or FSI); just a GREAT easy to use high BTU coal. Excellent choice for fireplaces/stoves or furnaces/boilers. More $$, but if you can afford it, it's worth it!

Kentucky Stoker (.25"x1.25") Basically the same as the Kentucky lump, but small and uniform size. Great Coal for small hand-fired stoves/Stokers!

Let's continue to try to be as specific as possible and give as much information as possible when posting coal sources. It is a great benefit and service to others to have this information: phone# and/or address; price; location; sizes; etc. :)

Let me get this straight. Bituminous coal is the 'dirty' coal and can it be used with a hand fed hot air furnace? Just want to make sure.

If the "hand fed hot air furnace" is designed to burn coal (shaker grates etc.) then soft coal should work just fine. Is there a specific model furnace are you wondering about?
