So I'm in SD this week for bike week and to see the national parks, etc. I'm also going over to Wyoming to check out Devil's tower, only 70 mi from Gillette. Does anyone know where I could get a 5 gallon bucket or 2 of Powder River Basin bit coal to sample? Thanks!

Been there a few times in my younger years & back then I could care less about seeing or scoring some coal but there again I was younger & Sturgis wasn't anywhere near as tame. Good luck on your search anyhow. :?

I think this is the only soft coal dealer in SD. http://eisenbraunmatcoalco.tripod.com/id13.html Ive never been there so know nothing about them. There is Center, ND that has cheap lignite too.

Ive been to the Black Hills a few times. Reptile Gardens was a favorite stop of mine on the way there. Plus Mount Rushmore and Deadwood. Catch the play about the Trial of the man that shot Wild Bill. Its very entertaining and funny. I think they do the play every night.

Ok know this is late but you would have to go to LAW Trucking in Belle Fourche, SD 605-892-2068 or 605-210-0137 He has Wolf Moutian Coal.
Its sub bit 9300 BTU good stuf I got a load of pea for my Hitzer 82FU this year.

I wish I had more time (and storage space in the Prius) when I was in SD this summer. I drove right through Belle Fourche!

I went to Eisenbraun coal co. Their phone number was disconnected, so I punched their address into the GPS and headed there. I pulled into the place... No signage, but there was a run down old truck on the property with the company logo on it.

An older gentleman, who looked to be in his 80s, came out of the house, eased onto his golf cart, and motored over to my Prius. His name was Reinhold Eisenbraun. With his thick German accent, he recanted stories of delivering coal throughout the Rapid City area over the years, and lamented the decline in coal use, and ultimately the closing of his business. He had some coal bins that had the remains of some lump sub-bit from Cheyenne, WY. He offered me a lump to take along, which I gratefully accepted. Reinhold kept bending my ear into the evening, talking about the spread of the city, and how much things have changed in that area in his lifetime.

Chasing different types of coal, I have met some very interesting characters, and this was no exception! I still have the lump sitting here in my coal hod. I'm not sure if I'll burn it or not... I may keep it as a token to remember that trip by!
