Here Is the Ad for ROM Bit Coal at Ben Hal
lumpocoal I was wondering if this coal you burn is in a basement or in the living area. I have what is the same as a hitzer 50-93 in the living room and use anthracite but wonder if I could burn this bit without unhappy results.smell or to much soot,

mine is the hitzer 55 fa (forced air) ducted into the exsiting duct work, I don't have the correct blower on mine so its basically gravity heat. I wouldnt try this stuff in living space unless you are hard up and need heat. I have learned to be quick on loading my stove because the smoke that is emitted is more than the chimney can handle with the loading door open. I rigged up an exhaust fan at the basement door leading outside for this. I live alone w my daughter and she don't complain much about it, just do a general dusting of the house every couple weeks. I would also imagine that if I had a decent chimney set up I wouldnt have near the back smoke when loading ( a piece of well casing that when it cools I get a slight down draft) so that has alot to do with it, I rent a house off of my boss, so its a temporary set up so nothing extravagant. sorry for the long explanation but this is why it may work better for others if ya know what I have to work with, Don

And I have 4 90's in my stove pipe leading to the chimney, so I clean he pipes once every 2 weeks. the chimney stays pretty clean though, I have basically restriction problems w all the 90's Like I said, my setup kinda sucks but I heated it last year for $400, alot better than propane prices so ill take the occasional smell/soot over the price of propane

best suggestion for ya is to see if you could purchase 50-100lbs of it in 5 gal buckets and give it a 1 firing try and see how it works, by all means...dont be scared of it :box:
an appropriate setup for bit coal requires a well drafting and large (diameter) chimney and connecting pipe. 8" is best. My hand-fired bituminous stove is right in my dining room and there is NO smoke or smell in the house whatsoever. I have an 8" connecting pipe and an 8x8 tile liner extending 3' above the peak of the roof; the stack drafts very well and I've never had a problem. If you have a proper setup there's no more smell or mess in the home than you would get from anthracite (which is of course none). loading coal fines into the stove will increase the initial flair-up and will tend to make the problem worse when your stack is too small; this is one of the many reasons I highly recommend the largest sizes of bit coal that will fit in your stove.
(sometimes if your appliance has a 6" collar and you use a reducer just after the opening to bring the 8" connecting pip down to 6" the small spot of 6" pipe won't cause enough restriction to give you a problem.)

My setup in the house is 6in off the stove into a 12x8 liner, up 20ft The 6in is maybe a 10 - 12 inches long. So I might not have those problems in the house?

Mine is all 6, except for the well case its 6 3/8, like I said I rent the house and no permanat mods to the house, and another reason cost, so I just put up with the extra maintenance
