Ya don't have to complicate the hell out of it. ;) Just use the cap that is recommended for the triple/double wall--mine's double. All that goop is from prior single wall wood stove creosote & roofing tar. toothy

Then just use single wall & put a cap on it. It'll last till it needs replacement. With my wood stove, the single black would last 4-5 yrs & we get some outlandish weather out this way.

Theoretically, you don't. I'm sure you could jury rig it somehow, but, I'd go with one or the other. Without pix of what you're doing, it's hard to understand. At least for this old farmer. ;) Again, whatever you use, the cap will keep the rain out.

Look at Fred's picture and you will see what is called a storm shield at the bottom of the chimney. It keeps the water out of the flashing. You could make up or buy for your size of pipe.

Ebay has some deals on cheap double wall, scratch and dent, I would be carefull with dents on the ends where they connect. Stick to all the same brand, so if you buy piece by piece, make shure you can get more.
