You have to go to Florida to get the best Kentucky coal ;) Seriously though there is good and bad coal in Kentucky an West Virginia and Ohio. In fact probably the worlds best coal can be found in the Pocahontas coal field in the point where KY WV and VA come together, some of it tests out at 15,000 BTU a pound.

Chances are that most of the coal that is sold as KY lump is not from KY, Obetz hardware stoe is a very good example of that, (they buy it from bramhi and sell it at a extreme markup)

Unless you can get a assay sheet its kind of a shot in the dark, because soft bituminous coal is highly variable in heat content, ash content, coke button(swelling index), and ash fusion temperature an all those variables in the coal can result in a good burning coal or one that really should be used as fill material. Just check that the coal is mostly coal and not much rock. You will know if its trash, ok or, really good after you try it.
