Stoker Coal Boiler: EFM 520
Other Heating: Oil boiler and pellet stove

Post by Polymerman35 » Thu. Apr. 27, 2023 12:37 pm

Hey everyone, need some input. Still getting everything setup for use on my EFM 520, but I am planning to have this boiler in my out building with the coal bin outside and have the auger go through the wall into the bin (it will be covered to keep snow and rain out). I wanted to see what everyone thought about using a grain wagon as my coal bin. Was just scrolling online for something and seen some pics of these come up and it got me thinking. Have seen some used ones in decent shape for a few grand. Probably way overkill and would need some modifications, but what do you guys think.

It's been done with good results. Neighbor up the road has a gravity feed (same as yours) & is REAL happy with the results.

Finish out your profile. Maybe someone near you has one, knows of one for sale. Been one on craigslist near me for awhile now.

I can see may pratfalls to a gravity design but it is certainly the way to go. Instead of designing and making your own design I would recommend copying one that has been proven true.

Unless one likes to design their own designs, like me, and enjoy solving problems.

Works good with rice/buckwheat as long,,,,,,,as the coal is dry. If it’s wet, it freezes up into a big lump.

I used to borrow one to get rice coal. Made the load a little top heavy but it worked fine.

If you have a set of forks on a tractor that can lift 1-1/4 ton, go with the system I have been using for years.
