- Stoker Coal Boiler: EFM furance
I have an EFM coal (hot water) furnace. I'm not sure where to look to properly identify *which* EFM it is. It's at least 40 years old (assuming older), as I've owned this house for 24 years and it looked like it was here for awhile before that.
I'm having an issue where there is a squeaking noise coming from the engine area (where you can lift off the metal protective box). I'm assuming it is a worn out bushing of some sort, as there is LOTS of oil there, but until I can figure out which model it is, I can't order replacement parts and fix it.
I've attached a photo of the front - don't know what else to take a picture of, figured I'd see if I can get direction on here.

I keep all the appliances paperwork either attached to the device with tape or on a wall nearby. And when I buy a house I seek all these documents prior to sale, its part of the buyer contract. I assume if they seller does not have a manual then maintenance as required has not been done and I adj my price. A tip for buyers.
Has the part that is squeaking been identified yet ? That maybe more important than the appliance's model #.

might b pot bushing pot bushing is a sleeve that the auger shaft goes through. IT is a wear item and needs to be replaced every so often and does require auger disassembly
somewhere on this form is a complete pictorial of all the efm parts. Is your door round or square ? that helps and there is a serial number plate on the fan housing. Plate may be covered with dusty oil . an will require kneeling down with a flashlight. . there is also a pressure vessel identification place under the jacket and in y case in the back of the boiler.this will require you take the jacket off. I go for looking for the part pictorial to save time . I cant find it at this point

The model of the boiler is irrelevant, what you need to know is the model of the stoker. It is almost certainly an S15 or S20 model, but you can tell by looking at the tag on the side of the fan housing.
In the picture below you can see where the tag is located.

I’ve attached more photos.
If it is the pot bushing, how long do you think we have before it breaks? (I’ll order the part, but it’s obviously not going to be here right away).

There are small oil holes in those rotating arms... Have you been oiling them?
They need a few drops a few times each heating season...

Nope... had no idea I needed to. What kind of oil should I be using?
(My plumber has done some basic maintenance on it, but I try to do things like vacuum out the bowl, etc)

Looks like you have an S20 stoker. The rotating arm on the transmission is marked S20. The squeaking is from the gearbox or the rotating arm. Drain and change the oil in the gearbox and oilr the three oil ports. That’s a good start.

All oiled up and squeaking noise all gone... now we're onto another issue in another part of the furnace.
