After 3 weeks of running, it was time to change coal skids. After removing the empty skid, I called my helpers down for the quick 5 minute new skid loading. My 5’1” (“and a quarter!”) daughter for pusher, myself as pallet jack steerer and my wife as auger box guide signal director (I should get her flags like they do on aircraft carriers!).
We started out no problem, but after 3 ft came to a sudden stop. My daughter said the wheel coating had just shattered. She and I were continuing to try to push and tug when my wife said “Why don’t you lower the pallet jack and pull it out and fix it”?
Swallowing my male pride and thinking I might get score some points, I said, “Good Idea!” (I always think of the country song “Its tough to kiss the lips at night that chewed my ### all day!”).
After 15 minutes of chiseling off the remaining 1/4“ polyurethane(?) coating on the steel wheel, we were rolling smooth again.
At any rate, it is amazing how hard it is to move over a ton of coal over something 1/4”.
Time to go get a coaled shower.

Is there a previous thread describing your setup? I would like to see how that is all engineered.

I went through the whole picture/description set. Anything different now vs then? Consumption less with time, or difference in coal quality? I assume coal is still cheaper for the amount heated? Off to read the rest of the thread.

The coal I am burning I bought some time ago for $285/ton. Our local coal supplier is now $500/ton, which even at that is still less expensive than oil.
As to the setup, it is still the same. It is as reliably boring as oil, with the exception of the boiler calling my cell to alert me when the ash bucket needs to be emptied.

Although my daughters in their youth made a killing at $3/day for ash tending, the only one left in the house is working full time in a hospital and taking college grad courses to eventually become a physician's assistant.
I do have my eyes on my grandson, though at 3 years old I might have to wait awhile!
