We are well into Spring down here now. Mid 70's and sunny today then a Big thunderstorm went through. It started out with some good sized Hail.
80's in the garage with the door open. 75 outside before the thunderstorm. Back to business... Over the past 7 days;
Fan reading, 3310.8 - 3274.8 = 36.0 hours of fan run time, 5.14 hours per day.
Ash reading, 1904.7 - 1885.8 = 19.2 hours of ashing, 2.74 hours per day, 53% of fan run time. 1 ashpan this week. Some gray rocks that come with Spring but, we still have some nice clinkers too. Gofer action. Current settings,
Fan RPM = 1635 RPM (Stock AHS is 1725 RPM)
Auger speed = 4.31 RPM (Stock is 8.05 RPM)
Grate cycles per hour = 10.35-ish (2 teeth on the ashing gear)
Aquastat = 175*F (Inkbird), ON/OFF, Hysteresis = 5*
Anthrastat = 130*F (Inkbird), Hysteresis = 0.3*
Low flue temperature cut off = 160*F, Hysteresis = 0.1*

Been pretty warm this week. 60's, 70's and a couple days in the 80's. AC season has started along with mowing season.
Fan reading, 3343.5 - 3310.8 = 32.7 hours of fan run time, 4.67 hours per day.
Ash reading, 1920.9 - 1904.7 = 16.2 hours of ashing, 2.31 hours per day, 50% of fan run time. One ashpan per week now! Powder, clinkers and some gray rocks, not to bad. The Gofer hole had finally made it down to the mouth of the auger this week. I raked the coal off the sides to even things out. It will be time for the barrel in about a month. Down to 1 slat now. I visited my coal supplier last week. $350 a ton is the current Summer special price.

Fan RPM = 1635 RPM (Stock AHS is 1725 RPM)

It's That Time Of Year!!!
Daytime highs are in the 70's and 80's down here. Thank's to VermontDay for reminding me that I normally reduce my boiler temperature set point this time of year.
Winter set point, 175. Boiler will fire at 170 and run to 180. Summer set point, 155. Boiler will fire at 150 and run to 160. The coal bin is getting low. So low that every 5 days I can see the mouth of the auger. In a few weeks it will be time to through in the barrel!
Here is some rare video footage of the Axeman sucking in coal.

Another 7 days.
Fan reading, 3373.8 - 3343.5 = 30.3 hours of fan run time, 4.33 hours per day.
Ash reading, 1935.5 - 1920.9 = 14.6 hours of ashing, 2.09 hours per day, 48% of fan run time. Ash is a bit heavier these days. Yesterday I witched to Summer settings. Boiler lowered from 175 to 155, ashing lowered from 130 to 125. We have started "Shoveling Around" season. Every 4 or 5 days coal needs to be shoveled over to the middle where the auger is. Today it was time to do some Spring Cleaning.
A quick bath for the Black Car. The White Car got a quick bath too! Current settings,
Fan RPM = 1635 RPM (Stock AHS is 1725 RPM)
Auger speed = 4.31 RPM (Stock is 8.05 RPM)

Don at the lower speed does it fall behind during long domestic use? I feel this is a pretty taxing draw since the boiler volume is kinda small, or do you have an indirect or a holding tank or something? Can't quite recall....

If by "lower speed" you are talking about the fan, 1725 RPM down to 1635 RPM isn't very much lower and shouldn't cause any DHW problems. But you have to remember that This boiler is running and AHS fan, not an Axeman fan.Retro_Origin wrote: ↑Sun. Apr. 30, 2023 3:53 pmDon at the lower speed does it fall behind during long domestic use? I use an indirect water heater and have no DHW problems.

The past 7 days have been much cooler than normal. 30's and 40's in the morning so we actually used some heat.
Fan reading, 3453.5 - 3425.6 = 27.9 hours of fan run time, 3.98 hours per day.
Ash reading, 1981.9 - 1965.4 = 16.5 hours of ashing, 2.36 hours per day, 59% of fan run time. Ash is a bit heavy this week but we got some nice sized clinkers. Still got some coal left. Current settings,
Fan RPM = 1635 RPM (Stock AHS is 1725 RPM)
Auger speed = 4.31 RPM (Stock is 8.05 RPM)
Grate cycles per hour = 10.35-ish (2 teeth on the ashing gear)

Too many Axemans! Got to make some room in here.
Fan reading, 3475.6 - 3453.5 = 22.1 hours of fan run time, 3.12 hours per day.
Ash reading, 1997.4 - 1981.9 = 15.5 hours of ashing, 2.21 hours per day, 70% of fan run time. Ash is not great. Some clinkers, some ash and a lot of gray rocks. I decided to weigh it, 39.5 pounds. Very soon it will be time for the barrel. Current settings,
Fan RPM = 1635 RPM (Stock AHS is 1725 RPM)

Time for a little Rice Coal Experiment!
Mined 9 buckets of Rice coal out of the basement. cleaned the Pea Coal way from the top of the Dog House. Set the 20 gallon trash can with the hole in the bottom on top of the Dog House. Filled it with Rice Coal! It's about 150 pounds. 4.5 buckets at about 34 pounds each is 153. A 55 gallon barrel holds about 400 pounds, 20 is 36% of 55, 144 pounds. so we'll say it 150 pounds.
Changed the fan pulley to 3" and the gearbox pulley to 3". This will increase the fan speed to 1725 RPM and the auger speed to 5.75 RPM. Over the past 7 days;
Fan reading, 3496.1 - 3475.6 = 20.5 hours of fan run time, 2.93 hours per day.
Ash reading, 2013.6 - 1997.4 = 16.2 hours of ashing, 2.31 hours per day, 79% of fan run time. The Pea Coal ash is very heavy and has a lot of gray rocks in it. Hopefully the Rice Coal changes that. Current settings,
Fan RPM = 1725 RPM (Stock AHS is 1725 RPM)
Auger speed = 5.75 RPM (Stock is 8.05 RPM)
Grate cycles per hour = 13-ish (2 teeth on the ashing gear)
Aquastat = 155*F (Inkbird), ON/OFF, Hysteresis = 5*
Anthrastat = 125*F (Inkbird), Hysteresis = 0.3*

I will be trying buckwheat again this fall to see how well it burns in my kaa-4-1 using 14 threads out
and reducing the coal draw point width by another inch and burn a few bags Blashack Buckwheat to
see how the coal burns and how heavy the ash is as I am still getting a great deal of dead ash that
has partially burned coal in it and rock.
I wish the eastern Anthracite was as clean and free of rock as the Sub Bituminous coal from Wyoming
and Montana.

Well that didn't last as long as I thought it would.
Fan reading, 3514.9 - 3496.1 = 18.8 hours of fan run time, 4.70 hours per day.
150 pounds over 4 days is 37.5 per day. About 8 pounds per hour.
We had some problems to work through. The chimney needed a cleaning on Monday night. After that I riddled around up in the cyclone come and a whole pile of flyash stated pouring out.
Filled that coffee can 1.5 times! The fire has been buried the whole time so I reduced the auger speed to 5.03 RPM by replacing the 4" gearbox pulley with a 3.5" one.
I also reduced the ashing speed to 1 tooth and tonight I dropped the ashing temp to 120 from 125. Put 4 buckets of Rice Coal in. I'm hoping that the chimney and flyash coupled with working through some of the Pea/Rice mix caused our 37.5 pound per day average consumption.
Current settings,
Fan RPM = 1725 RPM (Stock AHS is 1725 RPM)
Auger speed = 5.03 RPM (Stock is 8.05 RPM)
Grate cycles per hour = ? (1 tooth on the ashing gear)
Aquastat = 155*F (Inkbird), ON/OFF, Hysteresis = 5*
Anthrastat = 120*F (Inkbird), Hysteresis = 0.3*
Low flue temperature cut off = 150*F, Hysteresis = 0.1*

Over the past 4 days;Fan reading, 3514.9 - 3496.1 = 18.8 hours of fan run time, 4.70 hours per day.

The Rice Coal Experiment continues...
This has not gone the way I thought it would. I started out with the settings I ran a few years ago when I burned 5 ton of Rice. The fire kept getting berried and there were lots of puffbacks and heavy ash.
I increased the fan speed to 2208 RPM with a 4" pulley on the motor. Raised the boiler temp to 160 and raised the ashing motor cut off to 185 and decreased the ashing temp to 120.
Then I disabled the ashing overnight to get the fire to spread out the entire fire chamber. Now the fire actually breaks through the top and lights the volatiles before they go Ka BOOM! I also had to give it a bunch of overfire air by propping the fire door open and little. Over the past 4 days;
Fan reading, 3530.0 - 3514.9 = 17.1 hours of fan run time, 4.28 hours per day.
150 pounds over 4 days is 37.5 per day. About 8 pounds per hour.
We'll see if we do better this week. 37 pounds a day is a lot for DHW. 1 Day worth of ash. Mined 10 buckets of Rice Coal out of the basement. About 150 pounds back in the barrel. Current settings,
Fan RPM = 2208 RPM (Stock AHS is 1725 RPM?)
Auger speed = 5.03 RPM (Stock is 8.05 RPM)
Grate cycles per hour = ? (1 tooth on the ashing gear)
Aquastat = 160*F (Inkbird), ON/OFF, Hysteresis = 5*
