When you install the thermistor, be sure to stuff a piece of insulation in the outer end of the tube to hold the air or it will not read correctly (thanks, Don!)

Here is some EnviraCom documentation to get you started. This serial adapter is NOT available any more and really isn't needed with RPi and Arduino available.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/enviracom/files/enviracom/

Enjoy!

I am looking to interface a RPi with EnviraCom and I am wondering how you would get around needing the serial adapter. The EnviraCom data signal is 24VAC. How would you interface that to the RPi?

The manual says terminal 1 is data, and 2 and 3 are voltage. Maybe 1 is normal serial at Rs-232.

I'm not sure what the serial connection specs are. 'USB' is serial, but different specs from RS-232. I'm not an expert here, hopefully someone can answer.

I’m glad you found your true niche! All this talk might as well be written in Chinese to me…. But I’ll be talking to you much later on questions I have with a setup like this!

Usb is a more complicated high speed serial interface for multiple devices. Rs-232 is an old school interface developed originally for modems over the analog public phone system, known as PSTN(public switched telephone network). Bottom line is the data is sent as pulses along an analog signal. A high pulse as 1 and low as ground or below. At the digital level this is typically 5vdc as a 1 and ground as a 0. However to get these signals on dirty analog lines, the voltage is raised. This is the difference between digital logic level, 0 to 1 at 5vdc, and analog at rs-232 at +3-15 and -3 to -15.
For dirty hacks i have connected serial in (gpio pin 15) on raspberry from other devices, used a dumb terminal interface set to match the sending device parameters, ie 7 bits no parity, 9600 baud, to read data. My last hack was talking to the love controller on my ahs 260.

Looking at the stuff you posted, my best guess is the 24volt supplys the interface. This looks like a half-duplex(think walkie talkie) setup. You could connect pin 14(tx) to pin15(rx) tied together on pi to enviro, and make sure your terminal program is set to half-duplex. Litterally term 1 of enviro to 14 and 15 of the pi gpio connector. When you hit enter on the dumb terminal it should transmit, and then wait for a response(if any) before sending again since the handshake signals cts/dts are not being used.

Found this article on the bus and how it transmits over 3 wire setup.
