Hand Fed Coal Stove: Heco

Someone has one for sale. According to this forum, the last was made in 1977. We can't find the serial number. It is supposedly working perfectly. Does anyone have an opinion on whether it is worth buying ($1,500)? I would need it to heat a 3,200 radiant floor house and for domestic hot water year round. I am in Ohio and so would have to drive quite a ways to pick it up.

I appreciate your help.

If its working good, no leakes and auger, grates, ect all in decent shape it is well worth 1500

Yah, Thats the same thing as a seller saying "It ran when I parked it there". You better be carful and check it good before you pay $1500 for an old EFM.

Grates, augers, pipes, pot bushing, ratchet parts are just some of the things that can be worn out. If it is a 1977 it should be a plate boiler with a round door. Not much goes wrong with the boiler unless it was used for steam. Personally I would never buy a used steam boiler, there are plenty of used hot water boilers for sale.

Especially if you're driving a long way to get it, you should make sure you have a viable plan for loading it. IIRC the boiler head alone is 750+ lb, so extracting it (e.g., from a basement) can be challenging.
