Stoker Coal Boiler: EFM 520

Post by Chad520 » Sun. Dec. 05, 2021 10:07 am

Good morning all... I had to create a new username as it's been a few years since you fine folks have helped me previously.

So my old timer stopped working and a local dealer sold me an ATC Diversified Electronics timer Model TBF-120-ADA that plugs into an Octal Base model PF083A-E.

It's got a wiring diagram but it doesn't make sense to me as compared to the previous set up. I gave it my best guess and the boiler is "running" the way I have the base wired, but the timer doesn't seem to be working. (green led isn't turning on). I can't keep the fire up manually as I need to work this week so any help would be greatly appreciated! I'll attach as many photos as possible so you can see what I've got so far. I'm desperate to get this thing hooked up and running! Thanks!

The wiring coming in on the right (red/white) is as follows: breaker box > on/off switch for boiler > timer. Then the wiring on the left (red/white/black) goes out to the aqua Stat.

It looks like you have it wired right. I would check the Black and White wires at the octal connector for 120 volts just to be sure you didn't bugger one of the wire nuts. The timer should run if you have 120 volts there.

The other thing I noticed is you have 4 minutes "ON" time selected rather than 2 minutes. 30 minutes on the "OFF" cycle. I would think it would still work like that, but you never know until you get it running correctly first.

I don't think the green light will turn on unless the timer is in an "on" cycle. This timer runs the "off" cycle first, so you once it is energized you won't see the green light until the off cycle has passed.

If you have confirmed the timer is not running an "on" cycle at all, are you sure you don't have the base swapped 180 degrees? I can't read the terminal numbers in the pictures.

Thanks guys. I just plugged it back in and will see what happens. It's not swapped as it is notched and so is the timer. I'm nervous over this, but I'll post back here after 30 mins and let you know if the off cycle runs then the on kicks in. I don't have a good feeling about this and they drug me through the coals (pun intended) on the price of this timer. I need it to work.

Hey Chad,
Following your other post, is 120 your low or high? What type of controller are you using as 120 temp is low for a high limit. If that's a high limit that could be an issue as you could be bumping against that without any load and the fire is going out because of the high limit. Let us know what your what type of controller you're using and it's settings. Some pictures of settings can help!

Hi Rob, I actually started another thread I think nepacoal was trying help me get some attention... I'm putting the specs there as of now but he's right I should've tagged this issue on to that thread.

Where do the wires from that aquastat strapped to the pipe go?

Feed/air?

Timer?
