Hello everyone my name is Larry I mad a jack of all trades and master of none. I love to tinker. I heat with wood at the moment but I recently puchaced a aa130 that was in need of some love. I bought it for 600.00 with two domestic water coils and two augers. The base needs rebuilt and it needed a rig welded in were the fan is.

Did you pressure test the water jacket?

Welcome Larry. Yer gonna love this boiler! I just refurbed an AA 130 last fall. Do you know what year yours is? You got a really good deal. Those extras might come in handy. Especially the auger.. Look for wear damage on the center of the auger where it rides on the bearings. Mine was in bad shape but I managed a fix for it by using a sleeve and resized bearings.

There is oodles of information on these boilers here. If you can't find what yer looking for just ask. I'll be watching with interest on your rebuild.

I think this boiler dident get used a ton but it did get abused lol. The insides are immaculate just it had a water leak at the domestic coil and caused the steel to rot out. And the base looks like it sat in some water.don I wanted to ask you what kind of rubber did you use for your new gasket on your domestic water coil?

For coil gaskets I bought a sheet of rubber from my local hardware store. I think it's 1/8" thick. While you have the coil out check the roots of the studs. They have a habit of getting thin on these old boilers. It's a good idea to change them now while it is still easy.

Good luck!

You could just call Axeman and order a gasket. I am sure the cost would be more, but you would not have to wonder if it was the right material, and it would be a perfect fit.

Most gaskets are a black or red rubber SBR, sometimes buna-n. For water it’s all the same except for the temp rating and chemical resistance.

SBR is max 212 deg f
BunaN (nitrile) is max 250 deg f

The Axeman gasket is the way to go. That said, the real trick is to maintain the clamping pressure. Waterside gaskets on a boiler requires periodic snugging because boilers breathe. When first installed and fired up you should go around and gently snug the nuts about once a week. Then a couple of months and then at least once a year. Don't tighten the crap out of them, just take up whatever give they gave up from breathing. Keeps the nuts from freezing up and the gasket from leaking. This procedure is an absolute must on steam boilers because if you don't, they will leak.

So tonight I got a few more things knocked off my list. I trimmed the ash doors out with 1/4x1” steel. Then I had two of the wheels the ashing grate rides on had slight flat spots so I cleaned them up and ran some welds on them and turned them down in the lathe. I had to weld the old bases they ride on back on the part I replaced. So I test fit the ashing grate to make sure I dident mess my measurements up. Just need to grind my welds and give it a coat of paint.

Use neversieze when assembling the rollers. Grease will dissappear very quickly from the heat.
