Yes, I measure what I burn... I burn just under 12.5 lbs/day so for the summer it's just under 1500 lbs. I don't burn year around to save money... I burn to prevent my boiler and stove pipes from rusting out. Having tons of hot water is just a bonus.

Wow that is some fantastic coal mileage! I don't think the Axe could even get close to that.. Too much standby loss with no insulation on the vessel.

- Stoker Coal Boiler: Gentleman Janitor GJ-5, Van Wert VA-600, Axeman Anderson130 X3.
- Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Harman SF3500 reduced down to 3 grates connected to its own plenum
- Coal Size/Type: Rice, Chestnut and whatever will fit through the door on the Harman
- Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood
After the biggest puff-back I have ever heard, an outfire immediately after, and then not lighting after 2 attempts I switched over to the Van Wert. It might be nothing more than the new crappy charcoal I bought to light it with but I didn't have time to mess with it at the time.
This gave me some time to play with the Van Wert and I successfully applied what I learned from running the Axeman. Since I was running the Van Wert when I ordered coal, I got 4.5 ton of Rice for the basement and 1.5 ton of Pea for the Axeman in the garage. Only 6 ton fits in the truck. I'll probably get about 3 more ton of Pea before Winter.
In my case I couldn't seem to tame the full throttle nature of the Axeman for Summer use. It was just easier to run the Van Wert low and slow. Once it actually gets cold in December we will switch over to the Axeman.

I had the extra ports on my manifold capped, I want to put ball valves on them, so when I move the hot tub into the basement this fall I can put a heat exchanger on the loop of the manifolds and start heating the hot tub with the boiler, and I need to switch out my pressure/temp gauge, it isn’t reading correctly, and I want to put in some more aqua stat wells in the boiler for future projects, and I didn’t go with a big enough expansion tank, so I’m doubling it up.
