Also is there a boiler with a 6" flue that will do the job?
You're killing me. I asked you to get the tape measure out back on page 1.
Are you referring to the thimble size, or the flue itself?

Thimble at the wall. I haven't measured the clay liner.

Is the thimble clay or metal? And per Rob's earlier suggestion the inside dimensions of the clay liner would be good to have, along with approximate chimney height (above the thimble).

Thimble is metal, about 4 ft off the basement floor. Chimney (flue) is over 20ft and at least 5 ft over the roof. I have a very strong draft.

Thanks. Can you get at the clay liner to determine the inside L x W dimensions?

Should be able to when I get home. I know when I put the Chubby in upstairs in the fireplace the 6" black pipe fit in without a ton of room to spare. I'll double check the basement tomorrow at some point.

Back when real masters of HVAC like Sting, Whistlenut, Yanche, and a few others were regulars on this forum, and I first came on board, those real experts always asked whomever was seeking advice to get a heat loss assessment before doing anything else. Manual J wasn't thought of back then, but these masters, who knew their stuff, still urged professional heat loss studies. And when asked why, they specifically said that the study was generally warranted because most people don't need anywhere near the monster boiler (furnace, stove, etc...) that they think they need. Times have clearly changed though. We've progressed beyond such stupidity. Now its better to buy a ton of coal and as large an appliance as you can than to be so stupid as to seek a professional heat loss study that could otherwise buy a whole single one time only ton of coal.
exactly why I gave up - well one of the reasons
kind regards
Sting
