So i finally am getting on to my piping as my parts come in, always seems like i need another one i didnt think of.
Going to do black iron to the manifolds then copper and pex after that.
Initially plumbing heat exchabger and then will add radiators as i can pipe them.
Using blue monster tape and dope..
One question is where should i put the wye strainer?
Before the pump, after the pump- return, supply???

- Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood
Sounds like a good plan there L. Unfortunately, I don't know where the best place to install the Wye strainer would be.

Place the Wye screen before the circulator to protect the volute and then the entire system.
If you have not done it already the circulator will benefit from being on the top of the boiler as it will pull any air bubbles through the steam chest and to the air vent if you do not have a Internal Air Separator, Airtrol Valve,
Steel Compression Tank.
Edit to add:
If you can afford it purchase the circulator mounting flanges with gauge ports and ball valves so that you can have a vacuum gauge on the inlet side and pressure gauge on the output side and you will always know what condition your circulator is in and whether the Wye filter screen needs to be cleaned to.

I had read on here in one of the threads that a wye was recomended in case any debris got in so as to protect the circulator.
Are you saying the pump should go before the air scoop on the supply side?

Unless you have an old cast iron radiator system that was previously open to the atmosphere, or recycled radiators that may have sat outside, debris in the system should not be a problem. With that said, the strainer won't hurt anything, so you might as well install it.
I would mount the strainer on the return header, prior to the boiler. That way any junk returning from the zones is captured prior to the boiler and circulator...and it will be mounted low and be easier to service. Your circulator should be installed after the air scoop and expansion tank, so it is pumping away from the scoop.

There should be a screen on the fill valve. So unless you have a situation like Rob suggests, it is unnecessary.

Yes i planned on "pumping away".
I will be installing a bunch of old cast iron radiators.
Thanks for the advice on location, makes sense.

Slowly getting there but making progress.
Seems always short 1 or 2 parts.
Sure hope it doesnt leak much.

How much radiation do you have in your house? Curious how you sized your ET. Looks like and EX30 or 60? I sized mine based on the website calc and it was coming up short, so i jumped to the 90. Im guessing you will be on the fringe between a 60 & 90.
