Sa-weet! Looks good. Did you do the install yourself? It looks neat & clean.
Maybe put a cap on that upper valve with the butterfly handle? If someone hits it it'll be a hot shower.

Looks like a 6006 is being used for outfires. Very neat install.

Freddy - I have a HVAC guy helping with the installation as its a big job. I under estimated the initial effort for the setup, installation, and operation of the unit. However, I enjoy these projects immensely. Next house will have the layout better suited for coal delivery. I am currently planning on storing the coal outside on pallets under a deck, and fill a 96 gallon drum as a bin for the first year. I originally thought about building a 8' x 6' bin with coal shoot to the outside, but then would not have room for my woodworking machinery.
My folks installed a DF-520 when I was younger (30 years ago), and it didn't seem like it was as much work back then to install! They live in PA where its possible to have coal delivered right into their coal bin. Here in MA its mainly bagged which makes it more laborious to operate a coal boiler.
Stoker-man - I did install the L6006A, and hope it works. I want to set this up for my parents DF-520 since the flame out occurs often on his system during the summer, and ends up with coal in the ash bucket at times. I should have the heating zones plumbed and wired soon so I can test out the coal operation.
Thanks for the feedback!
Dave

Can't have that happen! It would be better to carry 5 gallon buckets each day than to give up any tools!daluds wrote:would not have room for my woodworking machinery
The install...it's that type of thing I say "You do once and it's done". For sure it's a bunch of work, but so well worth it. You'll be happy when it's on line.

I see what looks like a 6006 on your cabinet, but how is it measuring temperature there? Is there a well tapping there?
I have to install our stoker and our waste oil boiler in the warehouse this summer for our showroom. I might make a thread about this project, with installation pictures. It might be a good time to show a bin being constructed. I get calls about this mystery all the time. I'm going to make it from pressure treated plywood using torsion box construction. That will keep the walls about 2" thick.

Stoker-man,
There is a well there for the L6006A aquastat, and have wired it to prevent the stoker from running if the fire goes out. I haven't tested it yet, but hopefully it will work out.
Using torsion box construction with pressure treated plywood for a coal bin would be a great design. How do you plan to construct the torsion box grid? Finewoodworking(.com) has some plans for creating a table top using torsion box construction, and assuming this can be applied to creating walls for a coal bin.

Have to download a flv player from cnet to see it.

I read about torsion boxes for the first time in Fine Woodworking back in the '80s. My first experiment building a torsion box shelf was for a custom bedroom cabinet set with a shelf for a TV set. Since then I've used them for doors around my outside building on my property. You can take 2 sheets of 1/2" plywood and some 1/2" sticks and glue and screws and make a door that is perfectly flat, won't warp or sag, and can probably be used as a bridge to drive a truck over. The door on my root cellar has been there since '89.
