Stoker Coal Boiler: EFM 700

Post by briankk » Fri. Feb. 22, 2019 12:54 am

I have an EFM 700, the round door. Everything is in good shape, but the I noticed, just today, that there is some water that is "spritzing" behind the metal part that hangs down (the smoke goes behind that). In other words, it's not leaking directly over the pot/grates, but it's spraying on the far wall opposite the round door.

Do these 700's have the same issue with tubes? Can I run it through the winter and fix it in the summer? Should I just get a new boiler or is it worth repairing?

Try some boiler seal to plug the leak and get through winter. You'll need to determine what and how much damage there is before deciding to repair/replace.

My EFM 700 did the same thing about 4 years ago, I dumped in 1lb of Black pepper, it stopped leaking and was still fine when I took it out of service last spring.
An old boil repairman told me about this trick.

I once used Hercules Boiler Liquid by Oatey and it worked well.

Brian, the tubes are held, and sealed to a ''boiler sheet'' by expanding them with a rolling tool that sorta flairs out the tubing wall OD. If one tube had a little burr or dirt or just not expanded as much as was needed, that can make a leak.

But like the guys are saying, don't give up the ship yet. This may be an easy fix.

Good luck !

Dave

PS. I have a tube-type boiler also.

I'd sure like to find a way to have new metal welded to the bottom. The whole furnace is in good shape .... The pepper trick and/or other leak stoppers sound good. I guess I should put in electric as a back up to the building ... because mid winter stuff like this is scary (it's an apartment building)

If it's just a small leak add some Hercules Boiler Liquid or do the pepper trick as was previously mentioned.
I had a seepage from one of the push nipples on a radiator here and Boiler Liquid did the trick.
