Per Keystoker, direct vents can only use rice... From their faq page:
What size coal can I burn in my Keystoker?
On direct vents, Rice only
On chimney models, rice, buckwheat, or a mixture of both

I'm on-site now, really appreciate the quick reply!
I wonder why?
Maybe so the fire goes out of power is out?

I think there is a greater risk for a hopper fire with a direct vent using buck...

So this whole direct vent thing....
ZERO draft without the draft fan running. What happens when the power goes out? Carbon Monoxide?

That's why you can only use a direct vent or a power vent on a stoker that has a small amount of coal burning on the grate. The lager stokers, like yours, cannot be power vented because the fire may stay lit causing combustion gasses to leak into the home.
That's why they make chimneys.

Ahhh...makes sense!
So how long should I plan on battery backup for the vent before the power goes out on his K2?

I've never heard of anyone using a battery backup for a power vent. I don't think you need one. The idea is that the small fire goes out in a few minutes with no draft.
