I'm looking at a couple of used indirect tanks. All else being equal, is the 79-gallon Buderus horizontal tank worth $150-$200 more than a New Yorker indirect? I'm not sure if the New Yorker is a 50 or a 70.

I would go for the New Yorker - those stone lined tanks resist corrosion very well.

An indirect water water is basically a storage tank with a heat exchanger. You pipe them as a separate zone off the boiler, and the tank calls for heat as needed to maintain the set temperature.

Don't make me say it...….If the water was hot you wouldn't have to heat it.

So In a way I guess I have one. I have a KA2 with the dhw coil piped into my electric hit water heater. I have a small circulator pump and a timer.

Well, this New Yorker model is not one I can find any information on. The guy selling it read the model 140EX off the label. I can't find any information on that model number (if it's indeed a model number). The seller thinks it's a 40 gallon tank. He says it looks like it has a stainless body when he removes the insulation jacket. He says the label says it has a transfer rate of something like 198,000 BTU/H Can anybody tell me what we have here?

It will do very well until it doesn't.

Size is very deceiving...198,000 recovery is a huge amount...and par for any other comparable sized indirect.

We have an indirect hot water heater. I don't recall the brand at the moment, but it was a "solar" version, which means it has super-duper insulation ;)

Put it on a priority zone on your zone controller and that's it. It just works.

TIP: Install a simple switch on the thermostat line so you can turn it off as needed.

We plumbed ours as first in series with electric HWH and simply flip the breaker for the electric when needed or not (is the boiler running).

I am going to add a 3 way valve so that we can bypass the electric tank when using the Indirect, though. Found after long periods of not using hot water- like going away a few days- the electric tank gets cold and it takes a while for the hot water from the indirect to raise the tap temp as the electric works as a tempering tank, which is not the desired effect, simply the result of being in series.

Here's a diagram.

Hope this helps.
