The ash pan and hopper lid you made for me 10 years ago is still working great! CoalHeat has that boiler and the lid & ash pan now. It lives on!Freddy wrote: ↑Sun. Nov. 25, 2018 10:38 pmI can still make a custom ash pan, but prices are nuts. Steel has gone up and shipping makes it near impossible. It's certainly way cheaper if you can find a factory made pan that works. If all else fails, get a stack of Grants & contact me! ( in reality, it's pretty easy to spend almost $100 for one delivered)
New Ash Pan???

Good to hear from you Smitty! I'm glad to hear that some of my pans are still in use. Sadly I've had to give up making them.

My son made my welded aluminum ash pan but he is so incredibly busy with a full time job a family and multiple properties i hate to ask him to find the time to make another. Until i find another source ill try to get by with just one along with a galvanized tub that only last a few months.

I get at least 3 years and sometimes 4... I rotate between four Behrens bushel tubs. I do run year around so they don't sit idle and rot in the summer. The big issue is the galvanized coating burns off relatively quickly in a Keystoker. The same ash tubs for the EFM last several decades and usually fail on the bottom from being dragged on the concrete floor...

Its because i spray them with water to keep the dust down and let the ashes cool down before transferring them to a series of plastic buckets. The water doesn't affect the aluminum pan at all but is very hard on the galvanized one.

I never thought of that. The paint may be more durable against the coal ashes than the galvanized. And they have specialty paints as well. It really doesnt get that hot in the bottom of the stoker. The paper label on the outside of the tub last for a few weeks. Amazon was selling the 5 gallon for $20 to $25 but now its $40 .I guess to cover shipping.

The ash pan label bursts into flames within 5 minutes in my kaa-4. I have it setup per manufacturer recommendations so it's cranking out the heat with only about 1 to 1 1/2 inches of ash

Unless you want to braze one or part of a DIY pan... vs. welding steel which is easy.
Aluminum is great until it comes to brazing thick parts...it takes more time and experience than simple welding.
DIYing it .. recommend cement sealer and riveting v. brazing when it comes to aluminum

Yes, I agree. I bend interlocking seams, then rivits, and sealer.davidmcbeth3 wrote: ↑Mon. Feb. 13, 2023 3:48 pmUnless you want to braze one or part of a DIY pan... vs. welding steel which is easy.
