Stoker Coal Boiler: Yellow flame
Hand Fed Coal Boiler: Sears homart
Coal Size/Type: Rice

So I’m noticing some I burnt coal in the back corners of the base not in the ash bucket idk if it’s coming over the side rails somehow or what anyone ever see this issue I think I seen that marks sells the side plates but they don’t look very short. I keep throwing the unburnt coal back in the hopper it’s about half a shovel every few days just didn’t know if there was something I was overlooking thanks everyone

Stoker Coal Boiler: Gentleman Janitor GJ-5, Van Wert VA-600, Axeman Anderson130 X3.
Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Harman SF3500 reduced down to 3 grates connected to its own plenum
Coal Size/Type: Rice, Chestnut and whatever will fit through the door on the Harman
Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood

If the coal is clinkering it could be getting stuck to the grate. This can cause a dam that forces the coal over the side rail. This is the kind of thing that can happen in cold weather. Reducing the combustion air will lower the temperature of the burn reducing this possibility.
