Is a timer even necessary? I never plan on using this off season.
Thanks

The short answer is "it depends". Some people can even run through the summer without a timer, others struggle to keep a fire even with a timer.
If you have a good chimney and the boiler gets heat calls every couple hours during the winter, you likely don't need a timer during the heating season.
If you have a timer, hook it up with a switch so you can disable it if desired.
