Stoker Coal Boiler: Gentleman Janitor GJ-81

Post by janitor_ed » Mon. Sep. 17, 2018 6:28 pm

Greetings,

I haven't yet completed a successful pressure test of my GJ-81 but I'm trying to think ahead about how to fancy her up a bit. What are the recommended paints?

I would think a Very High Temperature paint on the inside of the combustion chamber would be the only thing that would last any significant amount of time.

For the outside of the boiler I would think the temps should be a bit less demanding. Like sub 220 Deg. F.

I have heard about various paints that are supposed to neutralize the rust and prevent further oxidation. I saw a utility trailer that a guy treated with this type of paint and it looked like it was working well. I would think this type of treatment would be desirable for our precious boilers. What I don't know is if any of these "neutralizing" paints can hold up to higher temperatures. I'd love to hear about other's experiences or opinions on this.

Best Regards,
Ed

You aren't going to keep paint on the inside of a boiler.

Do not paint the inside. The paint will peel and collect flyash.

Exactly. And you don’t want to keep any in there either. As it flakes and burns off it creates peels and areas for fly ash retention. I suppose it would affect the heat transfer as well.

Wire wheel it out well on the inside, paint it on the outside. Fire it up and run screaming into the night.

The number one thing you can do to preserve your boiler... Is to run it year around. Only shut it off to clean it.

Yup, no point in painting the firebox part of the boiler. Just brush off the caked on ash and the sluffing off rust.

Inside the base, where everything rusts up, I have had good luck with "Rust Reformer" after wire brushing. Then I hit it with some Hi-Heat Silver.
Here are some pictures.

The outside of the boiler and base I usually go with "Rust-O-Lieum" 2X in the color of my choice.

The rear exhaust section on the Gentleman Janitor boiler can get pretty hot so I use Hi-Heat paint on that.

Rob, Coaledsweat, CoalJockey,

That makes perfect sense about the paint peeling a making things worse rather than better. So O.k. No paint on the inside!

Hi Don,
The outside of my base looks to be in pretty good shape but the inside is quite rusty with rust flaking off in layers. I clean it up a lot on last Saturday. I'll try the "Rust Reformer" on that.

Do you mean in the "rattle" cans? I have a fair stockpile of this stuff and if it will hold up to the temps then I might just make an art project out of this!

I'm assuming that this is also the Rust-Oleum version in a "rattle" can.

YUP, RATTLE CANS!

Pick two colors, a light one and a dark one, use some painters tape to make a design and BANG! Art Project!

Yeah painting combustion chamber big no no, take it from me I did it! Used expensive manifold paint and 8 years later still fighting with the remnants of it. It just seems to almost be like ash glue. Oh well I have more experience, remember experience comes from bad judgement.

Ha Ha! With me that could be questionable advice... I was thinking of something like a Deathstar / Imperial Battle Cruiser scene.

Those look great Don! Just like new on the showroom floor!

Ed

I painted my EFM boiler with plain Rustoleum rattle can paint, and did the base (more heat) with BBQ paint. It has held up very well.
