For sure. What were your findings with changing fan speed? Just ramp up time?
The fan speed sets the BTU output of one of these boilers, nothing else.

Unfortunately, all of my fans speed data was done with an Axeman fan. I am currently running an AHS fan and insulated fan plate. The AHS fan is different and will not easily relate to my Axeman fan data.

I am running a fan speed of 1460 RPM (Stock AHS is 1725 RPM). All that really tells me is that it is running at less than 130,000 BTU's.

Happy Fourth Of July!!!

This is about the latest we have run the Axeman. Through Spring and into Summer now. It is running perfectly and in the past it has had serious problems in warm weather. One of the differences this year is we are not running bottom of the bin coal loaded with fines. I guess in the Winter fines are no big deal for the Axeman, but in the warm weather it's puffbacks and outfires. I haven't heard a puffback yet! :o

Not enough time to do a proper update this week.

The only change is the Stack Temp Inhibit setting. I lowered it from 160 to 150. It takes about 5 minutes for the stack temp to get up to 160 and the fan only runs for 10 to 15 minutes. I was getting behind on ashing. This seems to have helped a lot.

Don, what would you say is the most advantageous 'non stock' upgrade you made to this beast? You've got so much info here...

Mostly, the mods I made are "Nice To Have's" rather than anything needed.

I would like to think that the insulated fan plate improves efficiency by keeping more heat in. But I have no proof of that.

The best thing you can do with one of these is match the heat output to the load, this will give you the best efficiency. I did this in very much the same way listed in the 1953 Burau of Mines report.

The Axeman is the most modifiable, tinker-able stoker boiler out there. So naturally, I tinkered, modified and Hot Rodded the heck out of mine!

Back to business...

Don I'm so proud of you for running this thing through the summer. You're far enough away from coal country to justify shutdown...but your principles hold fast...jolly good show....
