The copper does corrode but I think the main near-term issue is that expansion/contraction causes a lot of stress on the joints. If the OP is planning to own this house for a while I think Leon's suggestion of relying on steel pipe should be considered (at least do the numbers).

I would think copper is a big no-no with steam, at least anywhere near the boiler.
