Well, i guess its too early to talk about design. Because all my ordered staff has not been delivered yet.
The first step - installing huge 40feet double insulated chimney.
The second - digging trench for piplines.
I am planning to install boiler with chimney inside a garage instead of basement. Hot water with antifreeze will be circulating from garage to both buildings and back. In this case all 3 buildings going to be heated.
Right now i am looking for good insulated pipe. Will need 350 feet at least.

Well Alex, you're ahead of the game already, cause at least you know how to post pictures correctly. If you can accomplish that, your boiler install should be a breeze. Good luck on your hunt for bit coal. Why did you order a boiler for bit, when you can't access it?

Hello Joeg.
That is a good question.
I have decided to switch to coal about a year ago, and i didnt know at that time much about coal. Softcoal, hardcoal ,etc. The guy who built stroker for me said that nobody used it for antracite, yet.
He said antracite produce too much heat and stainless steel grit might not handle it.
The boiler itself is 60 kWt rated, so it can heat up to 6000sq.f.
I have about 4500sq.f so I am planning to run 70-75% of it max power.
I have background in physics and programming so I hope i can re-proggramm it somehow.

Just hope to share some ideas here, someone might find my project interesting. As far as i,ve inderstood there are 2 diff ways to adjust power first running it at 50% of max power but constantly. Second option - start- stop mode. For example running it at 100% but only 4-6 hoirs per day. Lets say we dont need it running at night when we all sleep, neiher at daytime when everybody at work. But we need heat and hot water before we wake up and after returning from work.
Here is the picture of my boiler without hopper and auger system. It weights 1300lb with hopper and all hardware (dry weight) and holds 100gallons of water.

Here is a pic of my garage and workshop on the second level.
First floor devided into 2 rooms. One room going to have boiler, the second storage for antracite.

I'm glad you have joined now before your work is already done. I'll learn plenty watching your install and hope to install a boiler too at some point when I understand the whole subject of boilers better.

I get anthracite from Bangor or Massena over the bridge from Cornwall. I'm thinking of taking a trip farther (cheaper)and bringing back coal with a truck. Have been told its okay as long as its for personal use but I will check with customs to be sure before I go, definitely. Very interested to follow your installation. That cold snap in Dec/Jan was brutal.

Welcome to the forum PL,

Interesting boiler, I'm not sure what 60KWt translates to in BTUH. That being said, if this boiler heats 6000 sq ft and you have 4500 sq ft to heat in 3 buildings, the 4500sq ft better all be insulated or you will be throwing KWt's (BTUH's) out the window.

You will also need to consider the heat loss of that 350 feet of underground piping. Please don't say you are going to use 1" pipe to distribute this 60KWt under ground.

Also, don't forget to factor in the domestic hot water load.

The stainless steel grate should be OK if it is the right type. The new DS stoker uses stainless steel pot rings. I have not seen any other stoker that uses stainless in the stoker.

Good luck.

-Don

PL, Just so you know, you may send those stainless steel grates out to a foundry as a pattern for casting reproductions in cast iron and have no worries.

Here States Side, we like Tomahawk Foundry

1 KWH = 3,412 BTUH (and 1 Watt = 3.412 BTU's)

A 60 KW boiler would be a 204,720 BTU boiler.

And for grins:

745.7 Watts = 0.7457 KW = 1 HP

1 KW = 1.341 HP

I have seen some info on a border. If you stay in the USA more then 24hours you may bring for free up to $500, or something.
Well, i will check it next time when crossing.
So, my calculations- 5tonns of antracite --roughly $1000 USA, so if I bring my wife with me, it should work somehow....:-). Lets keep on touch.

I do trucking for a living now, so everything gonna be slow, 'cuse I am working 2 weeks and 1 week off.
During cold months I been spending $300 for Hydro, and $800 for propane when was not using firewood stove.
Heating house with a firewood during -40, had some nice experience.
Here i found online calculator.
If i bring coal up to 1000CAD i will have to pay about 120CAD to custom.

Make sure there are not any regulations that would prevent bringing bituminous coal into Ontario.
