I've seen the video Rob did on youtube regarding changing the oil in the old style transmission. Anyone have any helpful hints or videos on doing the same with the newer style? Thanks!

I have only worked on one of the ones like you have. I think I ended up removing it and draining the oil out of the fill plug, but it has been long enough that I barely remember. One thing I DO remember it that the operating oil level was pretty low in the gearbox...I looked up the spec. from the manufacture to make sure it wasn't just low when I got it.

Yes I don't see any drain plug on it. Seems really odd there wouldn't be one unless they never intended for it to be changed.

You change it with a "Mighty Vac". Marks will have the EFM oil. It's a dealer item.

Thanks Scott. I'll rig up a vacuum. Can't believe they didn't include a drain on that casing.

I would be surprised if the oil is anything other than a std. industrial gear lube.
Terry - what is the make and model of the gearbox? There should be a tag on it.

"The gear box used on all the latest units is lifetime lubricated with 90W synthetic gear oil. The old iron gearbox with the 1/8" street elbow installed, uses 20W machine oil and is filled to the point of overflowing the elbow."
That quote is from the Popular Coal Stoker Topics section annual Maintenance of an EFM DF520 thread. I'll check the tag on my box.

That is something I was not aware of. I thought there was only the old style that is the skinnier version and the one like I have. Here are some pics of mine and does not appear to have a tag on it.

Last picture... is that an internal hex plug on the lower left corner & another near the shaft level ??

Yes - they are both fill plugs. the proper oil level is much lower, about halfway between the bottom of the gearbox and the large shaft.

Note that the manufacturer calls for an ISO 320 gear lubricant. This is a thicker oil than an automotive SAE 90 gear oil, more like an SAE140.
I am sure this gearbox is not very fussy in this application, but if you are going to bother changing the oil I would use what is recommended. Your local Grainger should be able to get you an ISO 320 product in a pint size container. Amazon may also have something.

The EFM stuff comes in a sweet looking little plastic squirt bottle if that makes a difference
