Wow does everyone just run with a comment!

My 260 is actually very quiet, just a fan running, no coal rattling, or ratchet sounding gears lol
Oh yeah, it will probably add 5 pages to this thread...and just wait until we all install decibal meter apps on our phones.

Not sure why it took me so long either. Just measured the EFM while it was running. Stood an arms length away and held the phone at chest height. Averaged 45 db on the stoker side, and 40 db on the opposite side. That is with the stoker cover in place.

If Don is able to do something similar, that would be interesting to compare.

Standing three feet directly in front of my furnace. The convection blowers.

I don't dispute the AA is louder, I just think that video recordings exaggerate it a bit, so I've read from many members.

Decided it would be best for this to be its own thread. It has already generated more replies than I expected, and I did not want to hijack Don's AA130 thread.

Good idea Rob!

To me, phones are still something that you use to talk to people.

I do have an audio sound level meter though.

I should go test my dads kb8. For some reason it always seemed much quieter than mine. His basement is insulated though. Mine isn’t yet.

Safety first gentlemen, I always wear OSHA approved hearing protection when tending my stoker.

You must have one of those turbo secondary combustion blowers I have been hearing about.

I am running the boiler bare-naked with no insulation or covers at all, I measured it at the same distance that Rob did and I am averaging 62 decibels. The stoker motor came from Sid Harvey's and although I think its a well built and durable motor, it does seem to be quite a bit noisier (the motor itself) than some of the other units I am running. I noticed that right off the bat when I first fired it up. I am anxious to see what kind of longevity I get out of it though, I will gladly take some noise if it means durability. Someone mentioned ratchet noise earlier and as far as that goes, there is none; the oil bath eliminates that. Only a slight bump noise as the tie-rod engages the auger drive on each rotation.

The Marathon motor that is bolted on the EFM at the old house is several years old and it is still whisper quiet. I should go measure that one too.

Mine has a Marathon motor as well, and it is considerably quieter than the AO Smith it replaced. I also run a tacky gear lube that keeps the ratchet pretty quiet.

My Kaa-2 boiler is very quiet. When stoking coal, I can hear a very slight crackle IF I standing next to the boiler. The combustion air fan is also very quiet, other than a once in a while squealing fit. The squealing comes, and goes. It's replacement fan is 20 steps away, if that. All in all, I would say the Kaa-2 stoker is whisper quiet.
