Must be something else WH,i have these same MI junk windows ,they are about 25 yrs old but were junk from day 1. And still I'm using about a quarter of the coal as ashbucket with the same or more SF home.
Could be a difference in the number of windows, or double hung (double leakage) vs single hung (single leakage).

I personally would rather have my house relatively air tight than super insulated & leaking like a sieve.

When i am outside in the cold,it is much harder to stay warm when the wind is blowing at 50 mph than when it is totally wind-still ,even tho the temp is the same in both examples.

yea airtight is no 1 . Even zero insulation can do better than a ton a week if its relatively airtight. I know my 12 windows are leaky but my basement is sealed up pretty good and partially under ground even if not insulated.

i have wenco windows, they arewood and metal clad, and they are rotted out, the sashes fall apart when you open them, i have a few duct taped shut. going to install pella vinyl windows this summer where needed.

I would think they had improved by now .I got mine (MI)for $35 each at a lumber co overstock sale in Hegins almost 30 years ago. Were new and still packaged. Couldnt beat the price at the time. I just installed a large pella thermostar this week at a rental, seemed well made and solid at $218 @.

Hey man there are a whole lot of miners depending on guys like us for paychecks. Keep it cranked up and let her eat. That being said there is a huge difference in coal. Try a few different brands. I really am satisfied with Lehigh. There are a lot of differences in ash and Btu between sources.
