Stumbled upon a Losch 475. Think it's worth getting for a project? Other then the hopper it appears to have good bones.

- Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Harman SF3500 reduced down to 3 grates connected to its own plenum
- Coal Size/Type: Rice, Chestnut and whatever will fit through the door on the Harman
- Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood
The hopper should never be a problem on a Losch, it's 1/4" plate steel.
Losch's are supper heavy duty. The main problem is the water cooled grate. After 50 years or so of constant use they might start leaking. When you go to look at it make sure they have water running through the grate if it is still hooked up.
As always, check the DHW coil area for rust. The Losch has a really big DHW coil, endless hot water.
Every coal supplier I know has more that one Losch. They are meant to run Barley size coal, but they are not real picky.
I used to have one. The grate was bad so I came up with another solution.

Thanks Don. This boiler is just sitting the basement waiting to be rescued. There is a giant losch oil boiler in the background that took its place. Best I can tell this boiler was shut down in 81 as per the "notes" scribbled on the side. I think the price is get it out of the basement, so I will need to do some more investigation before proceeding.

I think the Losch is pretty neat. I put a Yellow Flame stoker in mine, it ran great. If I still had it it would have a Van Wert stoker in it now. I think most of these go for the price you're talk'in about. It's a shame, they are one of the best designed/built units out there.
