- Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Harman SF3500 reduced down to 3 grates connected to its own plenum
- Coal Size/Type: Rice, Chestnut and whatever will fit through the door on the Harman
- Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood
Well I finally did it, I found a usable Axeman Anderson AA130. I have wanted one of these for a while now. The main reason I wanted one is because I don't know how they work. I have fiddled with most of the flat grate stokers out there and the under fed EFM, Gentleman Janitor and Van Wert but these AA's are a very different animal. So, this thread will be about my quest for Axeman Anderson knowledge.
Here it is. This unit heated both sides of a twin home up in North Central PA until a gas boiler was installed. This one has lived on city/municipal water all its life and looks to be in good condition. Everything came with it. They took it out in one piece so its still all wired up. The DHW coil gasket looks like it leaks but I think I can get away with just replacing the gasket. The dog house is pretty rusty on the bottom, I will probably just put the auger into a plastic barrel for now. Here's the "H" tag. Does anyone know what year this was made? Serial# 917550.
.
Here is the video playlist. pretty much everything I learn will go in here also.

The build year is in the serial number IIRC. I'm guessing 1991? If you are going to feed from a barrel, use the doghouse. Letting coal rest on the barrel of the tube will drag down and kill your motor eventually. I've proven that.
After replacing the coil gasket, re snug the bolts once a week for a month. The boiler breathes and the gasket settles. Snugging will really extend its life.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I will just make a wooden box to feed it and use whats left of the dog house.

Hey SD....Congrats on finding and saving the next treasure!!
I thought you were a little light on boilers with only two in the basement and one in the garage!!
You are gonna need to find a few more radiators to make use of that boiler heat!!!

Well, now there's 2 in the basement and 3 in the garage! I guess it's time to put on the garage extension.

I thought this AA was garage unit #2..... I just can't keep up!!!
+1 on the garage addition.....i think it needs an overhead crane set up in one bay for loading and unloading boilers. Please post pics as garage construction progresses!

The blue shop towel means your serious about bolting it to the floor Don!!.
As Click and clack would say that thing looks "butts ugly".
Another stoker to be taken under your tuteledge with a good cleaning and
perhaps staying in the garage??

That looks in amazing shape. Just a little rust around the domestic water coil. You'll be roasting peanuts in no time! The big question is.....What will be the color scheme?

If it pressure tests good it will get hooked up in the garage for now. That means no Van Wert comparison this year. It looks like I can plug the auger into my garage bin, then I need to get some Pea coal to feed it.
I posted an overview video of the project.
