Split returns are a nice touch.
If they are unbalanced a well positioned valve can tweak the side with less resistance to overcome the unbalance...but that's getting pretty fancy.

I closed the 2 ball valves half way on the return to sump lines before the common sump line header to slow the hot water down from the single B+G NRF25 last year and it worked pretty well moving 12 GPM using one speed one.
I still wish I had long low cast iron radiators in the house though.
But as my dear mother in law was so fond of saying "if wishes were horses you would have a stable full.
I cleaned up enough after horses and calves so...................

COAL!!!!
5 ton worth! The view through the coal port. Still a bit of room in there. We should have got another half ton.
I built a brace between the wall and the doghouse to keep the inrush of coal from breaking the doghouse off the bin. I turned it on for a minute just to see if the auger ran OK. No problems found. -Don

Well, the re-plumbing has been going very slow. I originally wanted to unhook the boiler, move it and reconnect everything over one weekend. It's been 3 weeks now. Since this has taken so long I have decided to pull the boiler, clean it up and paint it.
Then, I decided to remove the base to clean and paint that. This won't be a real re-furb but it will look much better than it does now.
First I removed the wiring and electrical components. The motor is still there. I only had to disconnect the motor, Anthrastat and pump. Everything else is still wired in, just removed. Here's what the Anthrastat looks like inside. Looks like the Van Wert will be doing DHW duty for a while longer.

Yesterday, I disconnected the auger and suspended it from the bin with some tie down straps.
Then removed the boiler from the base.
I need to do a little repair work on the base. The bolts that hold things onto the base are threaded into the base. This puts the threads in the ash pit area causing them to rust badly. The 4 bolts that hold the boiler to the base just broke off when I removed them. Time for some drilling and tapping!
We are going to pull the DHW coil again. On the last bolt snug down, one of the studs started moving. I was pretty sure it was broken so I didn't tighten it any more.
Today will be drilling, tapping and cleaning.

After pulling the coil and wire brushing the crud off of the studs, it's pretty obvious whats wrong with this stud!
Hummm,,, A couple of those are very questionable too! Well, now what???
Here we are again in the same old coal boiler dilemma, repair the studs? Or, just cut them off and weld a plate over the whole thing?
This time I'm leaning toward welding a plate over it. I was thinking of using the DHW coil for garage hot water, but we can do the same thing with a plate heat exchanger. Plating it over will also ensure that the boiler can't be damaged by a leaking gasket.

I'll have to give my favorite welder a call, see if he is still alive and willing to weld an old coal boiler. I still have the second Van Wert VA-600 that needs a plate welded on too.

Well, Scrapper is still alive! It's been a long time since I talked to him.
Here's look at one of the ware areas of an Axeman Anderson. The outer edge of the swirl chamber is constantly pelted with ash flung at it by the fan. On this one there is only a slight bit of ware. This boiler is go'in for a ride tomorrow so I loaded it into the truck. I screwed a couple 2x4's together and attached them to the bottom of the boiler. This will protect the cone at the bottom of the cyclone separator. All ready to go! -Don

That is a pretty sight!
And it will never leak again.
Scrapper even pressure tested it to 50 PSI.Now it's all ready to be cleaned up and painted.
