Don, In the future you can put a (1/2-3/4 tall) barrel (poly is best) with a big enough cut-out to clear fitting around the auger so that when the coal gets low in the bin you can then just shovel the short barrel full to get by day to day till next load arrives.

- Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood
Thank's, I do have a big blue barrel for this. I wasn't expecting to need it yet though.
I put up a few videos of the empty fire box with a small fire on the grate and the Rice/Pea mix experiment.
.
I find it pretty interesting that the Axeman has run the auger tube dry a few times and always manages to keep a small fire going.
So far the Rice/Pea mix is burning without a problem. I backed the ashing down from 140 to 138.

The rest of the videos are now uploaded.
The last 7 cover getting the fire back to full roar from just a little fire on the grate with the Rice/Pea mix.
Wow, we are up to 58 videos in this playlist! I haven't even started the refurb yet.
So far, no puff backs or other problems.

All I did to this one is, hose it off, take it off the truck, replace the DHW gasket and install it. I think there is one or two videos of it lay'in around here somewhere....
It wasn't until after it was installed that I realized the auger was bent. Then I replace the motor and the auger. In the off season, it will get refurbed and then installed properly.
You all have probably noticed in the videos there is a squeaking noise. This was originally why I replace the motor. shortly after replacing the motor, it came back. It turns out it was the fan belt. .
I put another belt on it and now it is nice and quiet.
With the Rice/Pea mix and no more squeak, it is REAL quiet. More videos to upload!
Right now the Axeman is carrying the full load, I shut down the Van Wert last night. I wanted to give the Rice/Pea mix a good load to get started on.
We'll run it like this for a few days to get some numbers on it. At 1:00 this afternoon I reset the clock.
I wonder if the feed rate is the same for this coal?

Wow, that's a lot quieter than it has been!!! The cat should be loving it now.
At this juncture are you able to make any efficiency assessments vs. the other boilers you have used over the past few years? Ease of operation assessments? Reliability assessments?

Sorry, I can't speculate on that one. I've never used anything but pea, and I have a gravity feed boiler. Until there is more data I would still stick with:
0.3 lbs. of coal burned per hour of idling + 9.5 lbs. burned per hour of firing
The actual auger feed rate would clearly have to be above 10.4 lbs. per hour, as it must replenish the coal burned during idle, as well as that burned during firing. Excess coal just goes back down the center of the auger tube, so it could be 12 or 13 lbs. per hour or more traveling up the auger tube. A sustained high fire should actually burn right close to 10.4 lbs. per hour.
