So Glad you are showing the World what goes on Behind Closed Doors.

I didn't even have a "peep hole" to see the "show" before I went and had Robax Glass cut.
BTW: Not easy to have circles cut in this stuff...success ratio is maybe 50% tops, even for a very seasoned veteran glass cutter.

I thought it was like a crock pot top glass piece?!

Would it work? I’m thinking about it!

No, SD got creative and added that handle...all I sent him was a flat round piece of Robax with a hole drilled in the center.

Wow, I didn't know that. So half of what gets cut is thrown away because it breaks. For and application like this you could cut it square if that would increase the rate of success.

Cutting an elliptical piece of Robax for a perfect fit on an AHS Coal Gun would seem to be nigh on impossible.

A perfect fit is it needs to be about 1.5" larger than the port. It just needs to be flat, the shape really isn't that important.

I didn't care for having any corners so it was worth it for me to have a expert work towards making round ones.
It also helped that I found some pieces too small for any other purpose for cheap too.

It was 77 degrees today. This is still February, isn't it? 10 day forecast doesn't have one single below freezing temperature in it. Well, at least the first part of the Winter had some nice cold weather.

So far, the Axeman Anderson 130M passes the warm weather, low draft, no timer test!

I just happened to catch it on a DHW call.

So I had to sit down and watch it for a while.

Even though it doesn't work much in this kind of weather it's still an interesting machine!

I've enjoyed watching the progress on every one of your many projects but I have to admit, this has become my favorite so far. It's a very cool and unique coal machine! Cannot wait to see it all painted and fully restored.

Thanks!

earlier this week the motor started making a squeaking noise. By today to was squeaking loud and constantly. I decided to replace it.

Lucky for me the Van Werts use a nice Dayton 1/4 HP motor very similar to the Marathon on the Axeman. And I have a few of those laying around. I had to swap the red and black wires inside the Dayton to get it to spin the right direction.

Sadly, I could not get the 5" pulley off of the old motor, which meant I couldn't get the 3.5" pulley off either.
IMG_2232.JPG

I ended up using a 3.5" Van Wert pulley and an aluminum 5" pulley. The Van Wert pulley was a bit to thick to fit on the motor with the other pulley so I swapped it with the gearbox pulley.
IMG_2228.JPG

This means that the gearbox will be turning a little slower so the auger will also be turning a little slower. This week I will try to get pulleys that fit better, until then, I will have to keep an eye on it to be sure it is feeding and ashing properly.

I moved the coal in the bin over to the auger side to keep it self feeding.

While I was at it, I wiped some of the muck off of the gearbox and put some more oil in it.

Friday I placed my order for the auger and all the other parts. While I was at it I decided to ask how much a new 130M cost. $7493 was the answer. That's not a bad price considering the competition and the kind of support you get from this company.

Don, I don't disagree that it is a lot of machine for the money, but I am pretty sure that price puts it outside the budget of most of the folks we meet on here. It is unfortunate that so few of these units are available either used or refurbished. I think they would be a lot more popular if there was a more economical way to get one.

A new 260M is $12K+. That's why you find a good used one. They're out there. Mine was 27 years old, the guy had run it about a month. Good deal, came with 5 tons of pea coal.

I fit into that category to, one tenth of that price is a little high for me. :D But for people looking at new auger fed units, it breaks down like this.
The New DS $7,000 (I think)
Axeman Anderson 130M $7,500
Van Wert AB600WC $9,000
EFM DF520 $10,000 ( I think)

I whole heartedly recommend a good used or refurbished unit. That will save quite a bit of money.

Besides the price is the location. I would have to drive 6-8 hours to get a used one. You guys are very fortunate to be able to buy used locally.
