Exciting thread, I hope to see how this turns out.
Another suggestion, is the fire chamber accessible to clean the boiler walls with a wire brush? A build up of fly ash can act as an insulator, keeping those interior walls clean for better heat transfer may help cut down coal consumption once things get tuned in.

Dec. 15, 2017 5:46 amhello guys im new to all this have a question about my van wert furnace. well its my pops. this machine is feeding at ungodly rate. this in a single house on a block. he will literally burn 2 tons a month. he has tried to switch out gears to bigger gears no good. i asked him the size of the stoker he thinks its a 400. his up stairs will cook with heat the down stairs just warm. the electric motor he uses is a 1/4 hp with 1475 rpm. the air feed is set at max and it just burns. he uses rice coal tried buck just smothers the fire. any help would be great any info i look for and get back to you with i will get that. the hot water will get so hot it will leave 3rd degree burns on ya thanks
You need a plumber with a steam rating as the plumbing needs work. We can speculate all day long and still not solve a problem that the plumber can solve in a couple of hours or even less time.
Changing the gears on this unit should not be necessary at all.
You need a steam rated plumber as this will be the fastest way to solve this issue as it sounds exactly like a balance problem as the restrictor plates may be gone from the radiators connections. Painters will throw them out if they remove the radiators to paint behind them and then the heating system has problems with balancing.
