Made a couple new ash boxes for the Kaa-2 today. Old ones are 13" x 13", and all rotted out. Every time I pick them up, I think they're going to fall apart. New ones are made of .032 aluminum, and will never rot out. They are also a little bigger in size (13" x 16").

Yep, that'll do er!!!!!!!!!! Lookin good Scott.
Oliver,
This is something I have been considering. Currently using round tubs. How much more capacity do you think the square ones have? Also can you tell about the material you used and how you constructed them?
Thanks!

Hi Kungur, The material is .032 aluminum. It is formed on a break. Joints are mechanical. Kind of like tongue & groove. Then caulked the seams so that they wouldn't get the fine ash wedging into them.
Originals worked just fine. However, if running hard, the ash boxes would be at max capacity at 24 hours. I've had them over flow if tending goes a little longer. I always thought a little more capacity would be nice. I put one in tonight. Talk about a perfect fit.............. 13 x 16 plus a handle on each side.
I'm assuming all the Kaa-2 ash pits are the same. Do you have picture / dementions of yours? How about your ash bucket size? Did your Kaa-2 come with round tub? Mine came with 13 x 13 square.

Mine rot out(round tubs) after only one year. I assume its because i spray each tubfull of ashes with water on pulling it out of the stove,to keep the dust down and the water reacts with the ash to rot out the tub.

I just purchased some SS to make a tub that same size. (13x16 Kind of expensive at $55 for 4x4 sheet. But i may try the aluminum route too. I did line my original square ash tub with aluminum ,the flashing type and it greatly extended the life of the tub.

My square tubs do seem to go quite a bit longer between changeouts. These extended ones should do ever better. The small round tubs dont go more the 1 day of steady burning in cold weather.
