I have adjustable Varivalves on all my radiators. I have them open 1/4 of the way open on the smaller rads, 1/2 open on the medium rads and all the way open on the largest ones.
No the mains are not insulated
The valves you have are toys when used on far radiators. Wide open they are superslow compared to a Gorton C or D.

The Gorton D vents 0.33 CFM while the Varivalve vents 0.516 CFM so I don't know how they're toys.

I measured all the main pipe diameters. It comes off the boiler at 2". Then about 3/4 of the way down the short main run it drops down to 1.5". On the long main run it drops to 1.5" about halfway down. Would this slow down or speed up the steam travel??

Problem solved. I set the thermostat anticipator to run longer cycles and the last rad is heating up during every cycle.

You need MAIN VENTS. The ones in the basement at the end of the runs.

They may need to be larger, or you may need to add more.

Are you getting any closer on the boiler install? I saw your post over on heatinghelp.com - no one is going to tell you that a 2" riser is a good idea.

The boiler install is going to have to wait til the spring. I ordered "The Lost Art of Steam Heating" so I'll be reading up on that and do the install myself. I will definitely keep everyone up to date on the forum when I start the install.
