I am replacing my auger pipe (EFM 520)and I thought I read somewhere that one could use schedule 40 PVC pipe after the aluminum pipe leaves the pot. Can anyone confirm such a use? Also much linger should the auger extend beyond the pipe in the coal bin for proper pick of the rice coal. thank you

I have heard of PVC being used for an extension pipe, but not for any part of the pot auger pipe. The spec for exposed auger is 2.5 flights beyond the pipe, or about 4".

Mike: Thank you --I thought about 4 inches was what I had before I pulled things apart. Also --yes I would not use PVC for connection to the pot but after the aluminum pipe (which goes into the pot) I was thinking of connecting PVC schedule 40 instead of steel pipe. It is appox 2 feet from the boiler unit

You're welcome. I think there are members who have used PVC as you describe. You might get useful info from a search, or perhaps some will weigh in here.

My father....but granted it was a pellet stove...had his plastic auger pipe catch fire when his auger motor switch malfunctioned and the burn went back to the plastic auger pipe.
My father lost his last home to a fire so his new pellet boiler is in a separate building, protected by concrete retaining walls, and has a sprinkler system. Nothing happened, but myself I would consider metal instead.
I am NOT telling anyone what to do, just saying what happened and why.

Rob-- what is the issue created by over tightening the set screw. Paul

That is exactly why some of the earlier posts specify the difference between a pot auger pipe and a bin auger pipe on an EFM.NoSmoke wrote:My father....but granted it was a pellet stove...had his plastic auger pipe catch fire when his auger motor switch malfunctioned and the burn went back to the plastic auger pipe.

I think ash is quite a bit more abrasive than fresh coal, so experiences with ash augers may not be directly applicable here.

I'm going to use 2" schedule 40 black iron pipe. Its the same as the EFM part except it's not blue.
