I came home last week to find my boiler cold. The motor had tripped out on thermal overload. So I made sure the auger would turn free, reset the switch and started to build a fire. Within a minute the motor started to smoke a little and tripped again. Since it was 9 P.M. I decided to pulled the motor apart because I thought it would probably be a bearing going bad. It turned out to be what I think is called the starter switch. It's mounted to the circuit board and is just a contact that closes. I filed it down a little bit and reinstalled and haven't had any issues for about a week. But I would like to get a spare because I don't think this one will last much longer or Maybe I'll make this one the spare. Either way I need a new motor. Should I go with another A.O. Smith, Dayton or Marathon? Are these motors are considered open drip proof with a dust shield or totally enclosed? I never heard of open drip proof until I started looking. I've always heard them called open windings, which I think they are the same but could be wrong.

A O Smith. I would prefer totally enclosed myself.

Annual Maintenance and Cleaning of the DF520 Boiler

AO Smith quality has gone down big time. I switched to Marathon and have had good results.

When you get your new motor, make sure it is running in the right direction.

They are all about the same now a days. I also prefer the Marathon. Snipe one on E-bay or offer a lot less on a "best offer" . A Dayton is the "best" one. They are costly though.

The Dayton 1/8 HP No. 5K500 on E-bay is a MUCH better buy ;)
